STEPHENVILLE, Texas - Seattle U women's basketball (3-18, 0-8 WAC) came out hot going toe-to-toe with the WAC's fourth place team Tarleton State (15-9, 6-3 WAC) in the opening minutes before the Redhawks' offense cooled, leading to a 77-46 decision in favor of the Texans at Wisdom Gym on Thursday night.
Redshirt junior Tamia Stricklin made plays all over the floor for the Redhawks, scoring 17 points for her eighth double-digit scoring performance this year. She tied a career-high four makes from behind the arc, shooting 57.1 percent from three point land, ending the night shooting 54.5 percent from the floor. The Renton, Wash. native added four rebounds, including two offensive boards, a steal and a block while handing out four assists.
Graduate Christeina Bryan was the second Redhawk to reach double-digit scoring on the night. She netted 10 points shooting 62.5 percent from the floor. The grad paced the team in rebounds, corralling seven, including a game high six offensive boards.
Freshman Candy Edokpaigbe added eight points and five rebounds, while going a perfect 2-for-2 from the free throw line. Fellow freshman Sydnie Rodriguez paced the team with three steals on the night, while connecting on a shot from three. Redshirt sophomore Olivia Moore scored two of Seattle U's seven triples and followed Bryan with three assists.
The Redhawks opened up the night shooting 54.5 percent from the floor and 60 percent from three, but turnovers proved costly through the closing minutes of the first quarter and the Texans took the 10 point lead at the end of ten minutes.
The heat that SU came out dissipated through the middle twenty minutes while Tarleton State got into a steady scoring rhythm. Facing a deficit heading into the final ten minutes, the Redhawks went on to outscore the Texans 18-13, producing an 11-0 run spanning nearly the final five minutes of the contest.
Seattle U scored 22 points in the paint, nearly identical to TSU's 24, while producing 13 points from its bench. The Redhawks also scored 13 second chance points, just nearly outgained by the Texans, who scored 20. Tarleton State found its greatest success scoring points off turnovers, taking the margin over Seattle by 18 points.
Seattle U remains in Texas through the weekend as the Redhawks prepare for an afternoon rematch against UT Arlington on Saturday at College Park Center.
