RIVERSIDE, Calif.- Seattle U women's basketball's (3-23, 0-13 WAC) rematch with California Baptist went in favor of the Lancers (11-16, 8-5 WAC) 81-68 despite a near even first half at the Fowler Event Center on Thursday evening.
Freshman Candy Edokpaigbe paced the team for the fourth straight game, scoring 19 points, nine of which came from the free throw line to mark a new career high. Edokpaigbe shot 5-of-7 from the field and picked up a team leading six rebounds and four steals in 32 minutes of action.
Fellow freshman Sydnie Rodriguez had a career night, posting a new high in points and triples, knocking down four shots from behind the arc. She scored 16 for the Redhawks, clocking all 40 minutes of the contest. Rodriguez went 5-of-9 from the floor and a perfect 2-for-2 from the stripe, while picking up two steals and four rebounds.
Also scoring in double-digits was redshirt junior Tamia Stricklin, who met the mark for the tenth time this season. She netted 11 for the Redhawks, shooting 62.5 percent from the field, while matching Edokpaigbe with six rebounds.
Graduate Christeina Bryan and redshirt sophomore Olivia Moore combined for 16 points, with Moore collecting two of the eight triples from SU on the night. Bryan went to work down low, scoring all her points in the paint. Seattle U scored a matching 28 points in the paint to CBU.
The Redhawks paced the Lancers with 14 second chance points, 11 steals to their seven and 14 points from free throws to their eight.
Both teams shot nearly identical through the opening minutes of the contest. The Lancers built up their first lead to eight in the first quarter before the Redhawks constructed an 8-3 run to close out the first ten minutes. Rodriguez hit her second triple of the quarter with 36.0 seconds to go in the opening minutes to make it 18-15 in favor of CBU after ten.
A quick 4-0 start in the second quarter gave the Redhawks back the lead by one as Stricklin and Bryan coordinated the offense at the start. The Lancers came around to take back the lead once more before Rodriguez and Moore evened the score 26-26 with under five minutes until the half. A back and forth ensued before a pair of free throws from Edokpaigbe gave SU a one point lead with two minutes before the break. A 5-3 run from CBU gave the Lancers the lead 36-35 lead into the half.
Despite the Lancers shooting 63 percent in the second quarter, the Redhawks only trailed by one after the first twenty minutes as Seattle U out scored the Lancers 20-18 in the second quarter.
CBU would turn the tables in the second half, scoring the bulk of their points in the closing twenty minutes. The Redhawks struggled to keep pace with the Lancers in the third quarter after a scoreless stretch led CBU to pad its lead 57-48 heading into the final stretch. California Baptist led by as many as 19 in the fourth quarter but SU held them scoreless through the final two minutes to make the final 81-68 behind a 6-0 run from the Redhawks.
Seattle U travels to Phoenix for a meeting with the WAC's regular season champion Grand Canyon on Saturday afternoon game before heading home for their final regular season conference games.
