LA JOLLA, CA - Seattle U baseball wrapped up the Tony Gwynn Legacy with a loss to Long Beach State, 7-15, Sunday afternoon. The Redhawks struck first for the fourth straight game, but once again could not hold onto the lead as they fell to the Dirtbags.
"Not a good day of baseball," head coach Donny Harrel said during postgame. "Our offense came out and gave us six runs the first two innings and then our defense and pitching could not hold Long Beach State down with to0 many free bases and mistakes."
Reese Harmon and Josh Cunnigan combined to drive in three runs in the 1st inning, with Cunnigan's being his first collegiate RBI. The power surge continued for SU in the 2nd, when Vicente Filiciano (2) hit a 3-run homer to right. The only other run produced out of the first two innings came in the 6th, where Kenny Ishikawa hit his third homerun of the weekend, a solo shot to right.
Isaac Hallam (0-2) was the arm with the decision, going 2.1 IP while giving up eight earned on five hits. Ryan Morrison, Reid Madariaga, Rowan Haynes, and Patrick Galvin all made relief appearances.
"We continue to need nine full innings of good baseball, and we have just not be able to achieve that yet," coach Harrel added. "Hopefully some home cooking will do us some good."
The loss drops the Redhawks to 0-7 on the season. They will look to get on track in 2025 when they return to Bannerwood Park this week.
