First Half Lead Slips against Utah Valley

SEATTLE - A tale of two halves did not fall Seattle U women's basketball's (3-22, 0-12 WAC) way in the rematch against Utah Valley (15-10, 7-6 WAC) as the Redhawks fell 68-51 at the Redhawk Center on Saturday afternoon.

Freshman Candy Edokpaigbe led the Redhawks scoring effort for the third straight game, pacing the team with 12 points, predominantly scoring from the free throw line by hitting six from the stripe. Edokpaigbe led with two blocks, eight rebounds, including four offensive boards, and tied a career high with four steals and four assists in 37 minutes of action.

Senior Julianna Walker and redshirt sophomore Olivia Moore combined for 18 points, hitting a combined six makes from behind the arc. Both picked up two steals on the day, while Moore handed out three assists.

Graduate Christeina Bryan also scored nine for the Redhawks, shooting 4-of-7 from the field, while picking up a steal and three rebounds.

The Redhawks combined from seven makes from three and held the Wolverines to four triples on the afternoon, while both teams scored 12 points off free throws. Seattle U paced the game in bench production, scoring 16 points amongst its reserves to Utah Valley's 13. The Wolverines turned the tide in the second half, out scoring the Redhawks in points in the paint and points off turnovers.

Seattle U kept pace with Utah Valley through the opening ten minutes, never trailing more than five. A triple from Moore made it 14-12 in favor of UVU with 2:30 left in the first quarter to spark what would be a 9-0 SU run to close out the first ten minutes. Freshman Sydnie Rodriguez propelled the Redhawks into the lead 15-12 with a make from three before Moore iced the first quarter 18-14 with her second made triple of the day.

The Wolverines would tie it early in the second quarter but Edokpaigbe and redshirt junior Tamia Stricklin tag teamed the Redhawks' game of keep away to retain the lead midway through the second. Seattle U ended on a 5-4 run to take the two point lead into the half 28-26.

Utah Valley came out hot out of the break, scoring 21 points in each of the remaining quarters. A flip of the Wolverines, a bout of cold shooting held in the third quarter for SU could not chip at the deficit. The Redhawks would score 16 in the final minutes of action, six of which came from Walker's two makes from behind the arc in the fourth quarter, to fall 68-51 in the second meeting with Utah Valley.

The Redhawks head out on the road for the final time in conference play, making stops to California Baptist and WAC leader Grand Canyon next weekend. Following the trip, the Redhawks return for two more games at the Redhawk Center, as they host Southern Utah and then Utah Tech on their Senior Day.
