CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. - Seattle U softball (7-7) highlighted its second day at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic with a come from behind victory over Long Beach State (5-6) 10-8 before narrowly completing its second comeback of the day in a 4-2 loss to California (8-4) on Saturday.
Graduate Jasmine Wehn led the Redhawks with four hits, including two doubles and the game winning home run against LBSU, 4 RBI and three runs, while hitting .500 in eight at bats across both contests. Senior Nicola Simpson followed suit with four hits of her own, hitting .500 in eight at bats.
Sophomore Sophia Kissling and junior Taylor Fitch recorded three hits a piece, with Fitch tacking on two runs and two RBI in eight at bats. Kissling hit .429 between both games and tied a career best two hits in the win against Long Beach State.
Sophomore Avari Morris led the Redhawks from the circle in the win against Long Beach, pitching for 5.0 innings. She faced 22 batters and struck out one, while allowing four hits and two runs of which one was earned to hold a 1.40 ERA on the day. Simpson pitched 4.0 innings against Cal, where she faced 16 batters and struck out four while allowing four hits and a run.
Sophomore Karen Spadafora paced the team with nine total putouts on the day, while Wehn picked up eight. Sophomore Mikee Morris led the Redhawks with five total assists between both games.
The Redhawks combined for 20 hits, 12 runs and 11 RBI across both contests to their opponents' combined 18 hits, 12 runs and 10 RBI. They hit a combined .303 batting average while holding the edge 5-1 in doubles against both LBSU and Cal.
Coming off a thrilling win against Northwestern, the Redhawks looked to remain in the win column by taking the rematch against the Beach. LBSU struck first in the bottom of the first to take the early lead 5-0.
The Redhawks began to mount their comeback in the top of the second after a single from senior KJ Hopfer and a wild pitch put SU in scoring position. Kissling dialed up an RBI single to draw in Hopfer to get the Redhawks on the board 5-1. The Beach added an additional run in the bottom of the second to push their lead back to five runs after two innings.
SU came out hot in the top of the third with Fitch immediately hitting out a double before Wehn got on base with a single. Facing no outs, Simpson hammered an RBI single up the middle to bring in Fitch for the score. Senior Amanda Morris stepped up to send out a 2 RBI triple down the right line to draw both Simpson and Wehn to cut into the LBSU lead 6-4. The Redhawks weren't done as Hopfer followed immediately after with an RBI double to allow Morris to score to pull within one.
Avari Morris entered the circle at the bottom of the third without allowing a run and stranding two alongside the Redhawk defense. Neither team scored until the sixth inning when Simpson singled and advanced on an error while Wehn scored the equalizer. LBSU struck back with two runs in the bottom of the sixth to reclaim the lead 8-6.
Seattle U did not shy away from the Beach in the top of the seventh, as Fitch rattled off an RBI single facing two outs to keep the Redhawk offense alive. Kissling came in for the score to make it 8-7 before Wehn stepped up to the plate. Keeping her at bat alive after six pitches, Wehn unleashed her first home run of the season. Her 3 RBI homer out of right field allowed Fitch and Mikee Morris to score to reclaim the lead 10-8.
With the lead secured, the Redhawk defense made quick work of the Beach with senior Tai Wilson and Fitch locking up the first two outs. After the Beach got to first, Amanda Morris grabbed the final out to ice the game 10-8 to guide the Redhawks to their first program win over Long Beach State.
The Redhawks returned to face California for the second time in program history later that afternoon. The Golden Bears struck first to take the 3-0 lead after the first two innings. After pulling off one comeback on the day, SU put the pressure on in the top of the third.
After a single from Mikee Morris and a Cal error put Morris in scoring position and Wilson on first, a subsequent Cal error put Fitch on first and allowed Morris to score. Facing one out, Wehn doubled to left center for an RBI as Wilson scored to cut the lead 3-2.
Simpson came in to pitch at the bottom of the third and immediately guided the Redhawks to a 1-2-3 inning. Neither team scored in the fourth as Simpson struck out three batters in the bottom of the fourth, but the Golden Bears would break through in the bottom of the fifth with a run while holding the Redhawks scoreless to take the game 4-2.
