SEATTLE - Returning to Southern California for the third straight weekend, Seattle U softball embarks on the five game, three day slate at the renowned Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic in Cathedral City, Calif. from February 21-23, starting the weekend off with Fresno State on Friday afternoon.
Senior Nicola Simpson ranks first in the WAC while leading the Redhawks from the circle. Her 0.97 ERA ranks top-70 in the nation, lowering from the start of the year after posting a 0.00 ERA in the last four appearances this season. Her 29 strikeouts ranks tied-35th in the country and leads all SU pitchers. The Seattle native comes off her second win of the season and first WAC pitcher of the week award of 2025.
Paving the way for the Redhawk offense is junior Taylor Fitch. Her 16 RBI through 10 contests ranks first in the conference and tied-19th in the nation. She holds a .364 batting average and ranks amongst the top-five on the team in runs (7), hits (12), doubles (5) and home runs (3). Fitch also comes off her first WAC weekly award, locking up the conference's player of the week distinction after guiding the Redhawks to a 3-2 weekend in SoCal.
Aiding Fitch is senior Tai Wilson, who paces the team with 13 hits and 11 runs on the season.The senior left fielder has at least one hit in the last seven consecutive contests and holds a .419 batting average through ten games.
Guiding the Redhawk defense alongside Simpson is graduate Jasmine Wehn. The first baseman paces the team with 72 putouts on the season and comes off a season high of 11 in the win against Pacific last Sunday. She also holds a .303 batting average in ten games, recording 10 hits and seven RBI this season.
Senior KJ Hopfer leads the team with 13 assists on the year. Sophomore Mikee Morris, who paced the WAC in assists a season ago, ranks second on the team with 12.
As a unit, the Redhawks are hitting a collective .300 batting average, combining for 82 hits, 54 RBI and 59 runs after ten games to rank fourth in the WAC.
The Redhawks revisit Fresno State for the second time this season for their tournament opener. SU took the first game by a 4-1 decision in Stanford. The win moved Seattle U to 4-1 in the all-time series against the Bulldogs and dubbed the Redhawks the winner of the last four straight meetings.
SU meets Northwestern for just the second time in program history on Friday. The Wildcats and Redhawks last met in 2020, with Northwestern taking the contest 1-0 in Tempe, Ariz.
Saturday opens with a rematch against Long Beach State following the season opener between the two teams. The Beach took the first meeting 7-6, cutting off the Redhawk comeback in the seventh inning. The two teams meet for the fifth time in program history and the Redhawks are in pursuit of their first ever win over Long Beach State.
The second day wraps up with a head-to-head against California for the second year in a row. The two met in Cathedral City for the first time a season ago, with the Golden Bears taking the game 6-4.
Seattle U wraps the weekend against Oregon State. The pair will meet for the 15th time since 2009. The Redhawks have won two of the last four, most recently defeating the Beavers in 2021 behind a 2-1 decision in Tucson, Ariz. Oregon State visited Seattle U at Logan Field a season ago, taking the contest 5-3. The Redhawks have three wins since their first meeting.
Following the weekend, the Redhawks travel for their final tournament to compete in the GCU/ASU Invitational. The weekend starts with two games in Tempe, Ariz. at Farrington Stadium and wraps up in Phoenix at GCU Softball Stadium.
