SEATTLE - Fresh off a weekend of match play, the Seattle University Redhawks return to stroke play for the Causeway Invitational in Sacramento. The tournament will be hosted by UC Davis and take place over two days, February 24 and 25. Competing alongside the Redhawks and host UC Davis will be San Francisco, Gonzaga, San Diego State, Nevada, Colorado, Cal Poly, Sacramento State, BYU, Fresno State, and Oregon State.
While the Redhawks have never competed in Sacramento, this is their second straight competition in California to start the spring season. Mountain Classic Match Play took place in Palm Desert, California, where the Redhawks advanced to the semifinals as a team and won two of their three matchups. Both Rivekka Jumagulova and Jeanne Padillo went undefeated in their three individual matchups across three days.
In all, Seattle U has thrived outside Washington this season. In three stroke-play competitions outside the state, the Redhawks have finished first, third, and fifth. Looking back at last season, the Redhawks finished the year with three of their last four competitions on the road: they won two of those and finished second in the other. That included winning the WAC Championship, held in Payson, Arizona, as well as winning the Red Rocks Invitational, held in Sedona, Arizona.
The Redhawks' only stroke-play tournament thus far in spring was the Wigwam Preview in early February. There, Rivekka Jumagulova finished third and Tsara Ralamboarison finished 12th, giving the Redhawks two players in the top 15 overall. The Redhawks as a team finished fifth at that tournament and have finished no worse than that in four of their five stroke-play tournaments.
Jumagulova and Ralamboarison are the two individual Redhawks to have top-five finishes thus far this year. Jumagulova has won two tournaments, the Pat Lesser Harbottle Invitational and the Portland State Invitational, which the Redhawks also won as a team. Ralamboarison's highest finish this year was fourth, at the Harbottle Invitational.
After this week's Causeway Invitational, the Redhawks will compete in Sedona, Arizona at the Red Rocks Invitational. That competition begins March 14 and will last three days.
