Redhawks Stay Hot Against Pacific, Split Final Day at CSUN

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Seattle U softball (5-5) combined for 16 hits in two games and homered twice against CSUN (1-6) to split contests on the final day of the CSUN Matador Classic on Sunday afternoon, shutting out Pacific (2-5) 9-0 and falling to the Matadors 5-2 at Matador Diamond.

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Seattle U softball (5-5) combined for 16 hits in two games and homered twice against CSUN (1-6) to split contests on the final day of the CSUN Matador Classic on Sunday afternoon, shutting out Pacific (2-5) 9-0 and falling to the Matadors 5-2 at Matador Diamond.
 
The Redhawks combined for 16 hits, 11 runs and 11 RBI between the split decisions. They hit a combined .281 batting average to their opponents' .140, allowing only six hits and five runs. Between three SU pitchers, the Redhawks tallied 13.0 innings pitched and struck out 10 batters. The Redhawks held a collective 2.69 ERA after two games to their opponents' 5.50 ERA.
 
Senior Nicola Simpson led the Redhawks to the season sweep of Pacific behind a one hitter shutout to open the day. She faced 22 batters and struck out 7 without allowing a walk while pitching all 7.0 innings of the contest. The Seattle native was one strikeout away from tying her career high in for the third straight time in her last three appearances in the circle.
 
Junior Taylor Fitch paced the team with three hits, a run and 5 RBI  in five at bats against the Tigers. Senior Tai Wilson posted a team leading two runs, while also knocking out three hits in five at bats. In addition to Fitch and Wilson, six more Redhawks came through for a score and recorded at least a hit.
 
Graduate Jasmine Wehn recorded a season high 11 putouts to lead both teams. Sophomore Karen Spadafora followed up with seven putouts, while Simpson paced the team with a career best tying four assists.
 
Senior Amanda Morris unleashed the floodgates in the bottom of the second inning behind a 2 RBI double allowing both Simpson and sophomore Avari Morris to score while facing one out. Wilson sent out a hit to advance sophomore Sophia Kissling and Amanda Morris into scoring position before Fitch followed suit with a 3 RBI double to allow Wilson, Morris and Kissling to score. Facing two outs up 5-0, the Redhawks would score two more times behind back-to-back walks with the bases loaded to end the second inning up 7-0.
 
The Redhawks went scoreless for four frames while Simpson posted four strikeouts in that time span. SU came through for two more runs in the top of the seventh behind a 2 RBI double from Fitch that brought in Wilson and freshman Abbie Fales. Once more, the Redhawk defense forced a three up, three down to cement the shutout 9-0 against the Tigers.
 
Following shortly after in the doubleheader was the rematch against CSUN. Fitch immediately got the Redhawks on the board when she sent out her third home run of the season facing two outs. In the subsequent inning, Spadafora hit out her first homer of the season out of left field to build the Redhawks lead to 2-0. The Matadors would take their revenge in the bottom of the second, scoring all five of their runs to take over the lead 5-2. Both teams were held scoreless in the final five frames and each recorded one hit through the remainder. Neither team committed errors on the day.
 
Sophomore Berkley Vance started in the circle pitching for 1.2 innings and faced 12 batters while allowing four hits. Sophomore Avari Morris pitched the remaining 4.1 innings and faced 17 batters while striking out three, only allowing one hit and no runs. Spadafora and Wehn combined for 12 putouts to bolster the Redhawk defense. Avari Morris led the team with three assists, which was a new career high for the pitcher.
 
The Redhawks travel for their final tournament in California next weekend for the renowned Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic held in Cathedral City, California. They take on Fresno State in the first game of the weekend, meeting the Bulldogs for the second time in three weeks.
