Redhawks Fall in Heartbreaker to Tarleton State

SEATTLE - A ten point lead at half and a career high 21 points for freshman Candy Edokpaigbe ended in a 79-76 defeat for Seattle U women's basketball (3-21, 0-11 WAC) against Tarleton State (17-10, 8-4 WAC) at the Redhawk Center on Saturday afternoon.

SEATTLE - A ten point lead at half and a career high 21 points for freshman Candy Edokpaigbe ended in a 79-76 defeat for Seattle U women's basketball (3-21, 0-11 WAC) against Tarleton State (17-10, 8-4 WAC) at the Redhawk Center on Saturday afternoon.
 
Three Redhawks scored in double-digits while two went for new career highs. Edokpaigbe led all scorers with 21 points in 39 minutes of action. She netted nine makes from the field, including one triple, for a new career best in field goals made. The Naples, Italy native recorded a new high in blocks, picking up three on the day, while leading the team with eight rebounds. 
 
Redshirt sophomore Olivia Moore posted a new career high after scoring 19 for the Redhawks. The bulk came from a new career high four makes from behind the arc. She shot 57.1 percent from three on the afternoon, while shooting a collective 54.5 percent from the field. 
 
Graduate Christeina Bryan posted 13 points for the Redhawks, leading the team with a new career best 11 makes from the free throw line. She led the team with three assists and grabbed five rebounds. 
 
Senior Julianna Walker hit two of the Redhawks' eight makes from behind the arc. She ended the day with eight points. Redshirt junior Tamia Stricklin went a perfect 3-of-3 from the field, including a triple, to score seven. She picked up four rebounds and a steal.
 
Together, the Redhawks shot 43.6 percent from the field while hitting eight shots from three. The Redhawks and Texans each scored 30 points in the paint. SU hit 20 of 24 free throws, scoring four more points from the charity stripe than Tarleton State. Both teams recorded 18 turnovers but the Redhawks would score 24 points off turnovers to TSU's 20.
 
Seattle U came out hot in the first quarter, shooting 53.9 percent from the field. The Redhawks led by as many as seven in the opening ten minutes after Walker nailed a shot from three to put SU up 14-7 with four minutes left in the first. Tarleton State grabbed its first lead of the game behind a 10-2 run but the Redhawks wrestled it back with a minute left from a free throw from Bryan and a bucket from Edokpaigbe to lead 20-17 after the first.
 
The Redhawk offense settled in the second quarter, but would still go on to out score the Texans into the half. SU held Tarleton State to 20 percent shooting from beyond the arc in the second quarter, while allowing only four shots from the field. A 7-0 run into the half off of a triple from Moore and four points from Edokpaigbe gave the Redhawks the 39-29 lead into the break. 
 
Tarleton State came out of the half with tenacity, out scoring the Redhawks by 17 in the third quarter. The Texans led by seven entering the final quarter, but the Redhawks did not back down. They turned the tables on the Texans to score 28 points in the final ten minutes. Tarleton State led by as many as nine in the fourth quarter. With a minute left, the Redhawks rattled off a 9-6 run to put the pressure on the Texans. 
 
A three from Moore with 52.0 seconds remaining cut the deficit to three. After misses from the Texans, Edokpaigbe locked up a clean up bucket to pull Seattle U within one, 77-76, with eight seconds remaining. Tarleton State went to the line and knocked down both before a last second heave went off the rim for the Redhawks to end the game 79-76.
 
Seattle U returns to the Redhawk Center next Saturday to host Utah Valley on February 22 at 1 PM PT.
