RIVERSIDE, Calif. - A combined six innings between Seattle U softball and Utah State went scoreless as both defenses orchestrated a game of tug-of-war to force the other into error. The Aggies (4-2) got one run through in the second inning for the lone score that would ice out the Redhawks (2-4) 1-0 at John C. Funk Stadium on Friday afternoon.
Senior Nicola Simpson posted back-to-back career best performances from the circle to lead the Redhawks on the defensive. She pitched all 7.0 innings and faced 30 batters while striking out eight to match her career high seen last Sunday. She posted a 1.40 ERA on the day, allowing only three hits and an unearned run, while accounting for two assists. Simpson collected strikeouts in five of the seven innings, with seven of the batters striking out swinging.
Senior Jasmine Wehn captured nine putouts while sophomore Karen Spadafora recorded seven of the Redhawks' 21 outs on the day. In addition to Simpson, sophomore Mikee Morris, junior Taylor Fitch and senior KJ Hopfer all locked up two assists a piece in the outing in Riverside.
Five Redhawks recorded hits in Seattle U's first meeting against Utah State since 2018. Senior Tai Wilson got on first after a hit in the bottom of the first before Spadafora got to first in the bottom of the second. Mikee Morris and sister Avari Morris each locked in a hit in the bottom of the third and fifth respectively. Wehn was the last to reach first off a hit in the sixth inning.
Wilson's single extended her hit streak to three games after leading the offensive charge against the Aggies. The senior left fielder has recorded at least a hit in five of the six contests so far this season.
The Redhawks stranded eight Aggies on the day, while pacing both teams with five hits. No Redhawk was struck out through seven innings compared to Utah State's eight and both teams captured 21 putouts on the day. Each team picked up two errors, but it would be a Redhawk error in the second inning that set up the run for Utah State.
Seattle U returns tomorrow for the CSUN Matador Classic hosted by CSUN in Northridge, California. The event spans two days and features Pacific, Seattle U and host CSUN. Both contests against the Matadors are available for streaming while live stats are available for all four games.
