SEATTLE - Seattle U women's basketball (3-18, 0-8 WAC) heads to UT Arlington, for its second contest of the season against the Lady Mavs (13-7, 8-1 WAC), eager to disrupt UTA's home streak at the College Park Center en route to its first conference win of the season on Saturday afternoon.
In their meeting two weeks ago, the Redhawks held the Lady Mavs to 15.8 percent shooting from three and 37.3 percent from the floor. An abundance of UTA free throws widened the gap in scoring, with the Lady Mavs hitting 23 makes from the stripe to Seattle U's nine. Conversely, the Redhawks shot a combined 35.6 percent from the field and 29.2 percent from behind the arc.
Redshirt sophomore Olivia Moore led the Redhawks in scoring against the Lady Mavs in Seattle. Since then, three other Redhawks have been SU's leading scorer. Redshirt junior Tamia Stricklin paced Seattle U against Tarleton State, paving the way offensively with 17 points. She handed out four assists and tied a career best four made triples in the defeat in Stephenville, Texas.
Freshman Candy Edokpaigbe paces the team while ranking 20th in the WAC in scoring, averaging 9.8 points a game. The guard is the conference's only freshman that ranks amongst the top-20 in scoring this season. She's shooting 52.1 percent from the field this season, averaging 3.5 makes a game. Her 1.5 steals a game ranks first on the team, while her 4.3 rebounds a game is third highest on the team. She's appeared and started in all 21 contests this season.
Aiding Edokpaigbe in scoring is Stricklin. The Renton, Wash. native is posting 9.4 points per game, including 1.4 triples a game. She's shooting 35 percent from behind the arc and leads the team with 28 triples on the year. Both Stricklin and Moore are tied 15th in the WAC with 1.4 triples a game. Moore has the third highest made threes on the year with 21. Freshman Sydnie Rodriguez is second on the team with 23 makes from behind the arc.
Stricklin, along with graduate Christeina Bryan, rank amongst the top-20 in the WAC in rebounding, with Stricklin grabbing 5.0 a game to Bryan's 5.8. Bryan is recording 8.6 points a game for the Redhawks shooting 46.2 percent from the field.
Redshirt sophomore Sheridan Liggett leads the team in assists with 2.7 on average. The mark ranks her 15th in the WAC this season.
Saturday's game is the eighth all-time meeting between Seattle U and UT Arlington. The Redhawks lead the series 4-3 after the Lady Mavs took the last game in Seattle. UTA is 9-0 this season at home and holds the second longest active winning streak at five games after defeating Utah Valley at the College Park Center on Thursday night.
Seattle U has a win at home, on the road and on a neutral court, but are in search of its first conference win of the season.
Following the game, the Redhawks return to Seattle for a three game homestand at the Redhawk Center starting with Abilene Christian on February 15. Tarleton State and Utah Valley will also make the trip over the next two weekends.
