SEATTLE - The spring season keeps rolling as the Seattle University Redhawks once again hit the road. This time, the Redhawks will be competing in Mountain Classic Match Play at the Classic Club in Palm Desert, California. The Redhawks are one of eight teams at the competition: Northern Arizona, St. Thomas, Boise State, Montana State, Wyoming, Portland State, and North Dakota State will all also compete.
The Mountain Classic Match Play will see individuals from Seattle University matched up against others in head-to-head match play. Each head-to-head match can award one point per hole, given to whichever golfer has the better score on that individual hole. A head-to-head match ends, and awards the winner's team a point, when that golfer's point lead is greater than the number of holes left to play. If a golfer is leading by two points, their head-to-head match would end after the 17th hole, as a two-point deficit would be insurmountable in one hole.
Rivekka Jumagulova, Tsara Ralamboarison, Annika Cruz, Jeanne Padillo, Aaryanna Morris, and Shayna Lu will compete for the Redhawks.
This is the sixth competition of the year for the Redhawks. In each of the last four, the Redhawks have finished no worse than fifth as a team. That includes a team win at the Portland State Invitational and two other top-three finishes, at the Eagle Invitational and Harbottle Invitational. The Redhawks had seven top-five team finishes last season and five top-three finishes.
It's been an impressive season for a number of Redhawks thus far. Rivekka Jumagulova finished third at last week's Wigwam Preview, her third consecutive tournament finishing in the top three as an individual. She has now had a score no higher than +2 to par in 12 consecutive rounds and 13 of 14 total rounds this season.
Tsara Ralamboarison made it three straight tournaments finishing in the top 15 with her 12th-place finish at the Wigwam Preview. Ralamboarison has had just one round worse than +4 to par since the conclusion of the season's opening tournament.
Annika Cruz finished out the Wigwam Classic last week wih a +2 over, 74 in round three. Cruz has had her final round be her best round in three straight competitions. This year, Cruz is averaging a score of +3 over par in the final round of tournaments.
The Redhawks have competed in Mountain Classic Match Play each of the last three seasons. Jumagulova, Ralamboarison, Shayna Lu, and Aaryanna Morris all won individual matchups at last year's Mountain Classic. Lu won three matchups, winning 2-and-1 over Wyoming and North Dakota and winning 6-and-4 over Montana State.
