SEATTLE - Voted as the WAC's preseason number four team, Seattle U Softball (0-0, 0-0 WAC) officially embarks on its first leg of the 2025 season at the Stanford Invitational, opening the year with a 12:30 PM PT clash against Long Beach State at Stanford Stadium on Friday. The Redhawks also meet host No. 22 Stanford that evening at 6:00 PM PT, which will be streamed on the ACC Network.
The Stanford Invitational features Pacific, Long Beach State, Fresno State and host Stanford. The Redhawks meet the Cardinal twice over the course of the weekend and conclude the event against Fresno State on Sunday morning. Saturday's slate features both the Tigers and the Cardinal for SU in the late afternoon.
Seattle U fielded two players to the WAC's preseason team in junior Taylor Fitch and sophomore Mikee Morris, as voted on by its conference counterparts. Fitch was also distinguished as one of D1Softball's preseason top-15 third basemen earlier this year.
The pair appeared in all 55 contests as season ago, the only two Redhawks to do so in 2024. Morris paced both the league and the team in assists last season, amassing 137. The feat landed her fourth in program history for assists in a single season.
Fitch, in her first season with the Redhawks, led the team in batting average (.374), slugging percentage (.615), RBI (37), doubles (19), and home runs (7). She recorded 65 hits, which ranked second on the team and scored 34 runs. Defensively, she notched 136 putouts and 68 assists. The effort put her on the All-WAC First Team and the NFCA's All Region Second Team.
Also returning for the Redhawks is sophomore Karen Spadafora. Spadafora earned Seattle U's first ever WAC Defensive Player of the Year in 2024, while being the league's first freshman to do so. She appeared behind the plate in all 26 conference games in 2024, accruing 180 putouts, 28 assists and ranking 57th in the nation in runners caught stealing with 11. In addition to the distinction, she also appeared as one of the five players on the WAC's All-Defensive team.
Key returners from the circle are senior Nicola Simpson, sophomore Avari Morris and sophomore Berkley Vance. All three appeared in 20+ games a season ago, with Simpson leading the trio with four wins and 20 starts. Morris and Vance combined for six wins for the Redhawks. Simpson pitched for 98.1 innings, holding a 3.49 ERA, which ranked second on the team last year and struck out 53 batters. Morris pitched for 60.2 innings, the third most on the team in 2024, and held a 3.58 ERA, while striking out 46 batters.
The Redhawks trail the all-time series against LBSU 0-3 since their first meeting in 2013. They've met twice on a neutral field since that time and have not played one another since 2020. The Dirtbags took that contest that year 9-2 in Cathedral City, California.
Seattle U and Pacific have gone head-to-head six times since 2016. After a win by the Redhawks in five innings in 2023, SU leveled the series 3-3. They've won the last three games, including two in Stockton and one on a neutral field. The Tigers took the first meeting in Seattle 7-3 in 2016. The two teams meet again in Southern California for the CSUN Matador Classic before becoming a series regular for one another. SU joins Pacific as the WCC's newest member in July 2025.
The Redhawks lead the all-time series against Fresno State 3-1 dating back to 2016 after winning the last three straight meetings. They are 1-1 against the Bulldogs on a neutral field, taking the last meeting in Fullerton, California 9-4 in 2023.
Friday is the 10th all-time meeting between Seattle U and Stanford. The Redhawks have taken two wins, last defeating the Cardinal 5-4 in Stanford in 2020. They collected their first series win 13-9 in 2018. The two last met a year ago in Seattle, with the Cardinal narrowly edging out the Redhawks 5-3 at Logan Field.
Following the weekend, the Redhawks return to California starting with a neutral site game against Utah State in Riverside, Calif. on February 14 before competing in the CSUN Matador Classic, featuring Pacific and host CSUN. The Redhawks debut at home on March 7 as they host their first home conference series against Abilene Christian.
