RIVERSIDE, Calif. – In a game of runs in yet a another classic battle between Seattle University men's basketball and California Baptist, the Lancers would sneak ahead down the stretch, sending the Redhawks to a 61-59 defeat at the Fowler Events Center Saturday night.

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – In yet another classic battle between Seattle University men's basketball and California Baptist, the Lancers would sneak ahead down the stretch, sending the Redhawks to a 61-59 defeat at the Fowler Events Center Saturday night.

The game was the Western Athletic Conference opener for both squads. Seattle U moved to 5-10 on the season while the Lancers now sit at 8-7 overall.

Matthew-Alexander Moncrieffe notched his seventh double-double of the season, finishing with game-highs of 18 points and 13 rebounds. In his third game back in the lineup and first start of the season, Kobe Williamson added 10 points. Maleek Arington added nine points and six assists.

AJ Braun paced CBU with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Dominique Daniels, Jr., who entered the game ranked No. 6 nationally in points per game, was held to just two first-half points before finishing with 15. Adam Moussa chipped in 10 points for the Lancers.

Neither team led by more than seven points in a chess match that featured is lead changes and 11 tie scores.

Seattle U's biggest scoring run, a 9-0 streak late in the first half, helped turn a five-point deficit into a four-point lead, 26-22, with 2:29 remaining in the frame. The Redhawks would carry a 30-27 advantage into the break.

The streaks of scoring and scoring droughts continued in the second half.

Williamson tied the game at 51-all on a putback layup with 3:26 to play. The Redhawks would then go without a field goal until the final seconds as CBU used a 10-3 run to move into the driver's seat, 61-54, with 11 seconds to play. 

Seattle U returns home to continue Western Athletic Conference play on Saturday, Jan. 11, hosting Abilene Christian in a 7 p.m. tip-off at Climate Pledge Arena. The game will air on ESPN+.
