PHOENIX – In front of a packed and rowdy Grand Canyon crowd for a nationally televised Western Athletic Conference showdown between the Redhawks and Lopes, Seattle U men's basketball held the lead at the break, but the Lopes would turn the tide late, holding on for an 83-74 final Thursday night at Global Credit Union Arena.
Matthew-Alexander Moncrieffe and Kobe Williamson had 20 points apiece to lead the Redhawks. Moncrieffe added nine rebounds to his line, playing just 26 minutes before fouling out with 5:35 to play.
Tyon Grant-Foster led all scores with 24 points, including 16 in the first half for the Lopes. He finished as one of four GCU players in double figures.
Seattle U (8-13, 3-4 WAC) led for much of the first half, using a 6-0 spurt to take their largest lead, 42-31 with 2:32 remaining in the frame.
The Redhawk defense would hold GCU without a field goal for the final 6:17 of the half to help carry a 44-39 lead into the break.
The dry spell would not last for the Lopes in the second, as they jumped out to an 8-2 start, taking their first lead since the 12:01 mark of the first, 47-46.
A 9-0 GCU run opened up the largest lead of the night for the home team, 72-60, with 4:29 remaining. Seattle U would get no closer than seven down the stretch.
The Redhawks return to Seattle next week for a pair of WAC contests, beginning Thursday, Feb. 6 against Tarleton State. Tip off from the Redhawk Center is set for 7 p.m.
