SEATTLE - Seattle U women's basketball (3-17, 0-7 WAC) surged out of the gates behind a roaring crowd of 300 middle school students for Kid's Day, but Grand Canyon (20-22, 7-0 WAC) quelled the storm in the middle twenty minutes leading to a 88-50 defeat for the Redhawks at the Redhawk Center on Thursday afternoon.
Freshman Sydnie Rodriguez guided the Redhawks behind a season best performance, scoring 13 points off a new season high three triples, while shooting 45.5 percent from the floor. She picked up three rebounds and handed out an assist in her 20th start this season.
Redshirt sophomore Olivia Moore added two of the nine threes seen on the day. She posted eight points and dished an assist in 24 minutes of action. Redshirt junior Tamia Stricklin and graduate Christeina Bryan also scored eight for the Redhawks. The pair combined for seven makes from the free throw line, as the Redhawks shot 85.7 percent from the stripe to GCU's 53.8 percent.
Stricklin hit 50 percent from behind the arc while grabbing five rebounds, including three offensive boards. She was one of three Redhawks with two assists on the day and also picked up a block. Bryan was the team's leading rebounder on the day, hauling in seven, including four offensive boards. She also paced the team with three steals.
Freshman Candy Edokpaigbe trailed Bryan with six rebounds and matched Stricklin with three makes from the charity stripe and two assists. Fellow freshman Lucy Larson handed out two assists and picked up a block, her third of the season.
The Redhawks came out hot, shooting 50 percent of 4-of-8 makes from behind the arc in the opening ten minutes. Moore led with two makes from three as the team combined for 46.2 percent shooting from the field.
Senior Julianna Walker kicked off Kid's Day with a three by way of Stricklin before Rodriguez hit a triple from a fastbreak to tie the game 6-6. Off a GCU miss, Moore hit her first three off a hand off from Edokpaigbe to take the lead 9-6 three minutes into the game. She made her second to cut GCU's lead to one, 17-16, with two minutes remaining in the first quarter before the Lopes scored three to end the quarter up 20-16.
A quiet second quarter from the Redhawks put them in a deficit at the half after Edokpaigbe hit two makes from the free throw line to close out the second quarter. The Redhawks trailed GCU 46-21 at the break.
The Lopes blazed through the third quarter as the Redhawks found difficulty getting shot opportunities. Seattle U worked to contain GCU through the final minutes, holding the Lopes to 21.4 percent shooting from the field but the deficit proved too expansive to overcome. The Redhawks fell 88-50 to the Lopes at home to close out January.
As a unit, the Redhawks shot 30.6 percent from the floor and a similar 30.8 clip from behind the arc. They went 12-14 from the free throw line. GCU hit 35-of-64 from the field, while hitting 7-13 shots from the stripe. The Lopes hit 11 makes from behind the arc, but found the bulk of their success off points in the paint. The Redhawks led the Lopes in second chance points, scoring 11 to GCU's eight. Both teams recorded 32 rebounds on the day, as the Redhawks outrebounded the Lopes offensively nine to eight.
Seattle U has the rest of the weekend off and returns to action next week with a road trip to Texas to visit both Tarleton State and UT Arlington.
