OREM, Utah - Facing a surging Utah Valley team with sticky hands, the Seattle U women's basketball team (3-16, 0-6 WAC) could not overcome UVU's (13-6, 5-2 WAC) 25 steals in the 99-55 loss in the UCCU Center on Saturday afternoon.
Two Redhawks scored in double-digits on the afternoon. Senior Julianna Walker led the team with 14 points, shooting 4-of-5 from behind the arc to match a season high in made threes. She picked up two rebounds and a steal coming off the bench.
Redshirt junior Tamia Stricklin added 10 points shooting 50 percent from the floor. She picked up four rebounds, including two offensive boards, while leading the team with two steals. Her five assists matched freshman Sydnie Rodriguez's, as the pair went for new career highs in assists. Rodriguez and graduate Christeina Bryan led the team with six rebounds a piece.
Redshirt sophomore Sheridan Liggett added seven coming off the bench, hitting two makes from deep in the second half. The Utah native tied a career best two blocks and matched her season high of five rebounds. She picked up a steal and handed out two assists.
As a unit, the Redhawks recorded 10 triples and 36 rebounds while producing 30 points from their bench. They shot 42.2 percent from the field and 37.0 from deep while hitting seven free throws. The Wolverines shot 46.6 percent from the field while draining 11 threes. Despite a similar shooting percentage, the Redhawks could not overcome 36 turnovers in the lopsided loss.
Both teams got off to a sluggish start before Utah Valley went on a surge midway through the opening ten minutes. Turnovers plagued the Redhawks early on, as the Wolverines took away offensive chances from Seattle U. Utah Valley ended on a 6-0 run to lead 20-9 after the first.
The Wolverines quickly shut down the Redhawk offense in the second quarter, not allowing a score until six minutes left in the half. Utah Valley continued to put pressure on but Seattle U found opportunities and struck back to add ten points before the end of the second. UVU took the 44-19 lead going into the break.
The defensive antics from Utah Valley held coming out of the half despite Walker striking first from three. The Wolverines began their push offensively, driving up their lead midway through the third quarter, a lead they retained to the end. Seattle U scored 19 points in the closing minutes of the contest, falling to Utah Valley 99-55.
Seattle U returns home for a Thursday morning game against WAC leader Grand Canyon for its Kids Day game at 11 a.m. PT at the Redhawk Center.
