CEDAR CITY, Utah - Erasing an early deficit in the opening minutes led to a Seattle U women's basketball (3-14, 0-4 WAC) lead at the half, but Southern Utah (3-14, 1-3 WAC) swiped the game 61-57 down the stretch at the America First Event Center on Saturday afternoon.

Redshirt junior Tamia Stricklin led the way for the Redhawks with 14 points and eight rebounds. She shot 37.5 percent from three, netting a team leading three makes from behind the arc and tied a career best three steals.

Freshman Candy Edokpaigbe rebounded from a six point game at Utah Tech with a 12 point effort to be one of three Redhawks to score in double-digits on the day. She pulled in two steals, two rebounds and a block while shooting 40 percent from the field and a perfect 3-of-3 from the free throw line.

Redshirt sophomore Sheridan Liggett posted 10 points coming off the bench, the bulk made from going a perfect 8-of-8 from the free throw line. Her eight makes from the stripe marked a new career high for the redshirt sophomore guard. She handed out two assists and brought in two steals.

Fellow redshirt sophomore Olivia Moore netted two makes from beyond the arc, shooting 50 percent from three in her first contest since mid-December. She collected four rebounds.

The Redhawks stuck around with a combined 14 makes from the free throw line to Southern Utah's 10. They posted nine triples to the Thunderbirds' six and picked up 10 steals to SUU's 3. Seattle U's 20 offensive rebounds was the most seen by the team this year, as the Redhawks posted a combined 42 rebounds on the afternoon to Southern Utah's 44.

After starting down by six in the opening four minutes of the contest, the Redhawks rattled off an 11-1 run to take the lead 14-10 in the first. Four makes from the free throw line from Edokpaigbe and Liggett gave Seattle U an eight point lead with a minute left in the quarter before SUU responded to make it 20-16 in favor of the Redhawks.

Despite only scoring nine in the second quarter, the Redhawks took the 29-28 lead into the half off of three made free throws from Liggett and Stricklin. The Thunderbirds reclaimed the lead through the third, going up by as many as eight. An 8-0 run off a triple from senior Sophie Benharouga put the Redhawks down one at the end of the third 43-42.

The Redhawks run maintained into the fourth quarter before a back and forth ensued to trade ties. Trailing by five with a minute left to play, the Redhawks sent the Thunderbirds to the line through the remainder, but could not get over the hump despite keeping it at a one possession game. A pair of Southern Utah free throws with 13 seconds left to go gave the Thunderbirds their four point lead to ice the contest for Seattle U 61-57.

Seattle U returns home for a Thursday night contest against UT Arlington at the Redhawk Center.
