SEATTLE – Seattle University men's basketball concludes a three-game Western Athletic Conference homestand on Saturday, Jan. 18, hosting Southern Utah in a 5 p.m. tip-off from the Redhawk Center. The game will air on ESPN+.

QUICK HITS

  • Seattle U earned a dominant 82-62 win over Utah Tech on Thursday night at the Redhawks Center, improving to 7-10 on the season and 2-1 in WAC play.
  • The Redhawks held the Trailblazers to a season low 15 field goals while knocking down 31-of-61 on the offensive end, their second highest field goal total of the year. It also marked the fifth time this season that the Redhawks shot better than 50% from the field.
  • Matthew-Alexander Moncrieffe was dominant once again, finishing with 22 points and 15 rebounds for his ninth double-double of the season.
  • Moncrieffe is now one double-double away from matching the most collected in a season by a Redhawk since Myles Carter collected 10 during the 2018-19 season.
  • John Christofilis had 12 points and Paris Dawson added 11 against the Trailblazers to give the Redhawks a trio of double-digit scorers on the night.
  • Moncrieffe was named WAC Player and Newcomer of the Week for his 23-point, 11-rebound performance in Seattle U's 66-64 win over Abilene Christian on Jan. 11.
  • Already Seattle U's all-time leader in blocks, Williamson tallied one block versus Abilene Christian, bringing his career total to 152 and counting.
  • Paris Dawson had 11 points versus Utah Tech and now has nine double-digit scoring outputs on the season, including in eight of the last 11 games. His season average of 10.9 ppg more than doubles his 2023-24 average of 5.1 ppg in nearly the same number of minutes per game.
  • Seattle U's 66-64 win over Abilene Christian on Jan. 11 marked the first time in 10 games this season that the Redhawks had trailed at halftime and came back to win. It also marked the first time in six games this season that the Redhawks won when the final score was within five points.
  • Kobe Williamson has appeared in 127 games during his Seattle U career, and now sits six away from matching the all-time games played leader Riley Grigsby (2019-23) who appeared in 133 games during his career.
  • Vasja Pandža and Viktor Rajkovic´ are each on the verge of playing in their 100th career games at Seattle U. The senior duo have each appeared in 97 games during their Redhawk career.

ABOUT THE SERIES VS SOUTHERN UTAH

  • This marks just the seventh all-time meeting between the Redhawks and Thunderbirds. Seattle U leads the series, 4-2.
  • The Redhawks have won three straight against the Thunderbirds, including a home-and-home sweep of the series last year.  
  • In the teams' last meeting, on Feb. 15, 2024, Seattle U got 25 points from John Christofilis, 18 from Cameron Tyson and used a big first-half lead (39-25) on its way to a 78-68 victory in Cedar City.
  • In the Seattle meeting on Dec. 2, 2023, Cameron Tyson had 22 points, Brandton Chatfield had a career-high 18 and Alex Schumacher added 14 points and eight assists in a 73-63 Redhawk win.
  • Southern Utah joined the WAC in 2022-23, marking the first meeting between the Redhawks and Thunderbirds since 2018. 
  • The Redhawks' first win as WAC opponents (in 2023) came by holding the (then) nation's top scoring team 27 points below it's average, including 1-of-25 from three.
  • Prior to last season, the last meeting came on Nov. 18, 2018 at the Redhawk Center as Southern Utah claimed a 73-70 win. 
  • Seattle U's first win in the series came in 2016, an 89-75 final in Cedar City, Utah.

NET RANKING UPDATE

  • In games played through Jan. 16, Seattle U ranks No. 164 in the NET rankings. That ranks third highest among members of the WAC.
  • The Redhawks' record thus far includes a 1-1 mark against Quad 1 opponents, including a road win at now 47th-ranked UC San Diego and a road loss at now 2nd-ranked Duke, and a road win over Quad 2, now 96th-ranked Washington.
  • Seattle U debuted at No. 105 in the first NET ranking of the season,  released Monday, Dec. 1.

HOME COURT ADVANTAGE
Seattle U has gone 47-11 (.810) on its home court during the past three-plus seasons under Head Coach Chris Victor. That record includes a 35-7 (.833) mark at the Redhawk Center, including 12-2 in 2023-24, and a 14-4 (.778) mark in 18 total games played at Climate Pledge Arena.
