TUCSON, Ariz. - Seattle U women's basketball went toe-to-toe with Arizona through the opening half at McKale Memorial Center before a fiery third quarter from the Wildcats gave Arizona the separation it needed for a 78-43 victory over the Redhawks on Monday night.
Senior Sophie Benharouga led the Redhawks, scoring ten points off 5-of-9 shooting from the field. She posted four rebounds, a block and a steal in 19 minutes of action.
Reigning WAC Newcomer of the Week graduate Taisiya Kozlova came out hot, grabbing three triples in the opening half. She ended with 8 points, shooting 50 percent from behind the arc and 30 percent from the floor, while adding five rebounds.
Freshman Candy Edokpaigbe made moves all over the floor, grabbing up a team leading three steals for a new season high. She ended the night with nine points, five rebounds, including three offensive boards, and two assists. Her five made free throws matched her season high.
The Redhawks negated the Wildcats' three point attack through both the second and third quarters. Once more, Seattle U found greater production from its bench, scoring a collective 27 points to Arizona's 18.
Arizona led by as many as eight midway through the opening ten minutes but a triple from redshirt sophomore Olivia Moore pulled the Redhawks within three, 14-11. The Wildcats surged back ahead to go up by 11, but Moore struck once more as the clock dwindled, launching a three to make it 25-17 at the end of the first quarter.
The Redhawks immediately kicked it into gear in the second quarter, as Benharouga forced a steal to lead to a Kozlova three. Another steal generated from senior Julianna Walker paved the way to another three from Kozlova to make it 25-23 less than a minute into the second quarter. Edokpaigbe delivered the equalizer 25-25 after Moore locked up another steal. Arizona surmounted another stretch of scoring to take the 43-32 lead into the half.
Arizona returned with heat coming out of the break, while the Redhawks offense cooled. Seattle U ended the game with ten steals, its third game with double digit steals, and a season high 12 offensive rebounds. The Wildcats locked up the third series win, keeping the Redhawks from their first win on the road.
The Redhawks remain on the road as they travel to Air Force on Saturday, December 7.
