SEATTLE - The first ever clash of feathered foes from opposite coasts featuring Seattle U women's basketball and Kennesaw State fell in favor of the Owls 64-41 at the Redhawk Center on Monday night.
Graduate Christeina Bryan led the Redhawks with 10 points and seven rebounds on the evening, hitting 5-of-8 from the floor for her sixth double-digit scoring affair of the year. Redshirt junior Tamia Stricklin added nine points and five rebounds, including two offensive boards, shooting 50 percent from three.
Freshman Sydnie Rodriguez had two makes from behind the arc and went perfect from the line to post eight points. Redshirt sophomore Sheridan Liggett recorded seven coming off the bench, while leading the team in assists with three.
Both teams struggled to get moving offensively though the opening minutes of the game before Bryan broke through at the seven minute mark. Kennesaw State responded in turn, scoring six to take the lead midway through the first quarter. A triple from Stricklin and a pair of free throws from Liggett got the Redhawks up one before both the Redhawks and Owls returned to an offensive lull. Liggett got the Redhawks up by four after a make from three point land, but Kennesaw State closed out the first ten minutes scoring the last four points to tie it 10-10.
The Owls started to find their groove in the second half, leading by as many as eleven to take the 27-16 into halftime. Kennesaw State got hot at the start of the second half, surging out by as many 26. The Redhawks started to pushback in the final quarter, but with time against them, they fell by 23.
The Redhawks held the Owls to 13 percent shooting from the arc while hitting five threes of their own. While both teams got to the line at the same rate, Seattle U got the edge scoring six from the charity stripe.
Seattle U returns to action on Friday as they travel to California with a meeting with Cal Poly. The Redhawks wrap up their non-conference slate at CSU Bakersfield on December 29.
