ABILENE, Texas - Seattle U women's soccer saw their 2024 season come to an end in the Western Athletic Conference semifinals, falling to Grand Canyon in penalty kicks, 2-4, Wednesday night in Texas. After neither side could find a goal through regulation and two over time periods, the Redhawks and Lopes went to the penalty spot where SU ultimately came up short.
"Today's outcome isn't what we wanted or expected," said head coach Julie Woodward. "This season and today's game, however, has been a testament to the team's character and their strength. I am so grateful to this senior class for everything they have done and for elevating this program both on and off the field."
The Redhawk defense once again flexed their prowess, keeping the Lopes out of the net during regulation. Kassidy Kirgan made highlight after highlight as she turned away 10 shots on frame.
Seattle U had the bulk of the possession in the two overtime periods, registering two shots to the Lopes zero. Despite this, they couldn't find the golden goal as the match went to the penalty spot.
Grand Canyon went first, converting on their first two before Kirgan made a stop on the third. SU would match through three shots on makes from U'i Kaaihue and Hallie Bergford. The Lopes would proceed to make their next two while the Redhawks had one saved as their season came to an end.
"I know our returning players will use this experience to fuel our future successes," Woodward added of the future of the program. "We will come back stronger, more determined, and with an even greater sense of family and togetherness."
The 2024 season ends as the Redhawks finished with a 10-3-6 record, securing their third-straight 10+ win season and the 24th in coach Woodward's legendary tenure.
