PHOENIX - Holding a lead into halftime, the Seattle U women's basketball team looked poised for its second win at the Talking Stick Resort Thanksgiving Classic before the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos shook off the Redhawks in the second half to defeat Seattle U 72-62 at the Global Credit Union Arena on Saturday afternoon.
Graduate Taisiya Kozlova led the Redhawks with 16 points, a new career high for the transfer guard. She matched a season high and career best four made triples, while locking up her first double-double of the season adding 10 rebounds, including three offensive boards. She shot 60 percent from the floor, including a 4-of-6 mark from behind the arc, while locking up a block and a steal.
Freshman Candy Edokpaigbe posted nine points and three rebounds, going 5-of-6 from the charity stripe. Fellow freshman, Sydnie Rodriguez, went perfect on both attempts from three, ending the day with six points. Redshirt sophomore Sheridan Liggett added another eight points while dishing out a team leading five assists to go along with five rebounds. She went 50 percent from the field and was perfect from the free throw line.
Graduate Christeina Bryan went perfect 4-of-4 from the charity stripe, adding eight points and a team leading two steals on the day. Senior Sophie Benharouga grabbed seven points in 17 minutes of action and handed out two assists while picking up three rebounds.
The Redhawks held the one point advantage through the opening ten minutes, holding the Gauchos to 23.9 percent shooting from the floor and 9 percent shooting from three. In turn the Redhawks hit 40 percent from deep and 54.6 percent from the field, reminiscent of their hot shooting from Friday.
Seattle U kicked it up a notch in the second quarter, scoring 19 to UCSB's 13. The Redhawks went 4-of-5 from three and hit 60 percent from the field to take the seven point lead going into half.
Facing the 35-28 Seattle U lead through twenty minutes, the Gauchos turned the tide in the third quarter, out scoring the Redhawks by 14. The Redhawks led by as many as 13 with eight minutes left in the third quarter, before UCSB battled back to take the lead with five minutes to go. A pair of free throws by the Gauchos gave them their largest lead of the quarter 56-49 with a minute remaining in the third quarter.
The Redhawks fought to narrow the gap, with Bryan drawing the Redhawks within five after hitting two free throws. The Gauchos played keep away through the remainder, despite Kozlova getting the friendly bounce off a triple to pull within nine with 1:15 to go. UCSB ended on a 3-2 run to lock up the 72-62 win over Seattle U.
Seattle U held the Gauchos to 32 percent shooting from deep and 41.7 percent shooting from the floor. The Redhawks collectively shot 45.7 percent from the field, hitting eight shots from three. They went 12-of-17 from the free throw line.
The Redhawks return to action on Monday, December 2 for a meeting with Arizona in Tucson at 5 p.m. PT
