PHOENIX - Hot scoring and a tug-of-war fell Seattle U women's basketball's (2-4) way in the 79-76 victory over East Texas A&M (3-4) on Friday afternoon at the Global Credit Union Arena as the Redhawks locked up their first program win over the Lions.
Four Redhawks scored in double-digits, with graduate Christeina Bryan leading the way with 16 points, 2 rebounds and two assists. The forward went 6-of-8 from the floor and hit her first DI triple of her career. Fellow graduate Taisiya Kozlova posted 14 points and six rebounds, generating two steals. She hit four of the 13 triples seen on the afternoon, tying her career high of made threes.
Redshirt sophomore Olivia Moore posted her fourth double digit scoring effort of the season, scoring 11 for the Redhawks. She went 5-of-8 from the floor and dished out a career best seven assists.
Redshirt junior Tamia Stricklin recorded the first double-double of the season, scoring 11 points and hauling in 11 rebounds, including four offensive boards. The guard went 3-of-5 from behind the arc while shooting 44.4 percent from the floor.
Senior Sophie Benharouga added nine points, including two triples and two steals. Redshirt sophomore Sheridan Liggett paced the team with three steals. She scored seven and brought in three rebounds. Freshman Candy Edokpaigbe recorded the lone block for Seattle U. She scored seven, shooting 60 percent from the floor, while adding five rebounds and two steals.
The Redhawks got off to a hot start through the first ten minutes, shooting 78.6 percent from the floor, including 6-of-7 from behind the arc. They held the Lions to 15 points and 40 percent shooting through the first quarter. East Texas A&M turned the tables in the second quarter, out scoring the Redhawks by 11. Despite the fiery scoring from the Lions, the Redhawks took the 37-35 lead into the half.
The pair traded scores back and forth through the third quarter, each recording 24 points. Seattle U tied the first quarter in made threes with six, hitting 50 percent from deep. The Lions shot 57.1 percent from behind the arc.
Holding the two point lead heading into the final ten minutes, the Lions pushed back to go up by as many as five, but Seattle U had an answer at each turn. The back and forth continued before the Redhawks were sent to the line. Tied 76-76 with a minute left, Bryan put the Redhawks up one. The Lions sent both Moore and Liggett to the line with under six seconds to play, with the two guards locking up the win with a 3-0 run.
Seattle U generated 12 steals to the Lions' eight for its second game in a row with double-digit steals. The Redhawks generated 32 of their points from in the paint and grabbed 16 second chance points to the Lions' four.
The Redhawks tied the second most made threes in a single game in their current DI era with 13. The last two teams to do so were in 2022 and 2017. Together, they shot 47.5 percent from the floor and 40.6 percent from deep, while the Lions were 47.5 percent from the floor and 50 percent from behind the arc. Seattle U got to the line more frequently, scoring eight from the charity stripe, and found success from its bench, generating 35 points there compared to East Texas A&M's 18.
For the second day of the Talking Stick Resort Thanksgiving Classic the Redhawks kick off the afternoon against UC Santa Barbara at 11 a.m. PT at Global Credit Union Arena.
