SEATTLE - Seattle U women's basketball team remains out on the road this weekend as the Redhawks (0-1) clash with Sam Houston (1-0) at Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. PT on ESPN+.
Seattle U kicked off 2024-25 on the road at Washington, where the Huskies took care of business on their home court. They handed the Redhawks a season opening defeat to maintain their series leading edge over their cross town neighbor.
Freshman Candy Edokpaigbe led the Redhawks at Alaska Airlines Arena, posting 11 points off of 4-6 shooting from the floor. She went a perfect 2-2 from the charity stripe while notching a steal.
Redshirt sophomore Olivia Moore grabbed a new career high 10 points, shooting 40 percent from the field coming off the bench. She recorded Seattle U's first three of the season, while leading the team with five made free throws, also a new career high. The guard dished out an assist, while hauling in a rebound and a steal.
Another impact freshman was Sydnie Rodriguez, who scored nine points in her debut. She shot 42.9 percent from the floor and hit a perfect 2-2 from the free throw line, while picking up two steals. Also scoring nine was graduate transfer Taisiya Kozlova. She paced the team with three steals.
Redshirt sophomore Sheridan Liggett hit a new career best four field goals, ending the night shooting 44.4 percent from the floor. She dished out two assists, collected a steal, while scoring eight for the Redhawks.
The Redhawks are in pursuit of their first win over Sam Houston in program history, while in tandem going for their first win of the season. In the last three meetings, all contests have gone in the Bearkats' favor. The two haven't met since the 2022-23 season after sharing a home-away series that year.
Sam Houston emerged with a 98-47 lopsided win in its season opener against Jarvis Christian on Wednesday to start its year in the win column. The Bearkats were 6-9 at home a season ago, ending the year 7-22 overall. They were picked tenth in the Conference USA preseason poll this year.
Following their bout with the Bearkats, the Redhawks have a week off before debuting at home against Portland State on November 16.
