SEATTLE - Seattle U women's basketball wraps up its preseason with an exhibition game against Saint Martin's at the Redhawk Center on Monday, Oct. 28 at 6 p.m. The event is open to the public at no charge. Live streaming will not be available.
With a roster full of new faces, Redhawk fans can grab their first glimpse of the team in action. Over the offseason, Seattle U added four freshmen and five transfers to its ranks to expand its roster size to 11. Senior Julianna Walker and redshirt sophomore Sheridan Liggett are the two returning players from last year's squad.
The Redhawks focused on pulling in experience, leveraging the transfer portal option to sharpen their championship-oriented mindset. Of the five transfers, four are upperclassmen, but all five know how to win in March. Graduate Taisiya Kozlova joined by way of Maryland and Dayton. The psychology master's student won a Big Ten championship title with the Terps in her freshman year and comes off a second round appearance in the A10 tournament from a season ago.
Joining by way of Fresno State is Tamia Stricklin. The Washington native spent three seasons with the Bulldogs and saw back to back quarterfinal appearances in the Mountain West tournament.
Redshirt sophomore Olivia Moore saw similar success from her previous school. The guard comes in from Long Beach State, where she spent her first two seasons. The Beach landed in the semifinals as a seven seed after posting back-to-back wins in the Big West Championship, defeating the tournament's six and three seeds before falling to eventual champion UC Irvine.
Graduate Christeina Bryan carries in two years experience from Georgia State after competing at Arizona Western. While with the Panthers, Bryan also saw a second round appearance in the Sun Belt's conference tournament. Senior Sophie Benharouga split her time between Morehead State and North Texas before arriving in Seattle. The 6'2 center brings in some length to the floor along with Bryan, who stands at 6'3.
The average height grew from a season ago, with the Redhawks standing at an average of 5'9 in the 2023-24 season. This year, the Redhawks average out at a height of 5'11.
The quintet of transfers nearly go player for player with the four freshmen, as experience meets fresh eyes and raw talent. Two made the journey from Italy as Nicole Benini and Candy Edokpaigbe made the leap to collegiate basketball and the United States this summer.
Freshman Lucy Larson, a Seattle native, joined the team after graduating from West Seattle High School this past summer. Sydnie Rodriguez joins from neighboring Idaho, where she was named to the SIC's First Team for three years. Rodriguez rounds out a band of lengthy freshmen, where, as a quad, they average out at the team average of 5'11.
The Redhawks and the Saints are well acquainted, having gotten to know each other from proximity and time spent together at the D-II level. In the past eleven meetings dating back to 2005, the Redhawks are 6-5 against the Saints. The two haven't played one another since 2021, where they met for the very first time in the regular season. Seattle U took the 80-69 win at the Redhawk Center that year.
The exhibition tips off at 6 p.m. on Monday night and acts as the first chance to see the team at the Redhawk Center before the team's first home game on November 16 against Portland State. The season begins on the road against Washington on November 4.
