SEATTLE - The Seattle University Redhawks earned four singles wins in their first matches of the year, at ITA Northwest Regionals. Yuan Lu, Filip Stipic, Dario Ristovski, and Michael Frank all earned wins in singles play.
Lu, Ristovski, and Frank all won their first matches in the qualifying round. Lu defeated Saint Mary's College's Liam Carpenter 6-0, 7-6 (7-4) to advance before falling to Gonzaga's Jay Fairclough 2-6, 2-6. Ristovski beat Portland State's Hayden Elliott 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), then fell to Gonzaga's Tom Dunlop 2-6, 1-6. Frank had a win over Ellison Greco of Saint Mary's 6-3, 6-3, but lost to Portland's Cade Fernando 2-6, 3-6.
Veselin Kiselkov, Yu-Han Hsieh, Jayden Harrison, Jun Sasagawa, and Oliver Hall all made their season debuts but fell in their first singles matches of the weekend. Lu, a freshman, was making his collegiate debut.
Stipic, the only seeded Redhawk, fell in the round of 64 in a tight match; 7-5, 6-7, 6-7, to Portland's Maxim Groysman.
In doubles play, Hall and Harrison reached the round of 32 but fell to Washington's Cesar Bouchelaghem and Dzianis Zharyn 0-8. Sasagawa and Lu, Frank and Kiselkov, and Stipic and Hsieh all fell in the round of 64.
Next up for the Redhawks is the WAC Fall Invitational, which begins October 24. That tournament will be hosted by Abilene Christian in Abilene, Texas.
