SEATTLE - Behind a hat trick from Caroline Penner, Seattle U women's soccer took down Oregon State, 4-1, Sunday afternoon at Championship Field.
"I knew today was going to be a grind for the team," said head coach Julie Woodward. "We had a tough week of practice, and I knew we had a few bumps and bruises going into the game"
Penner started her stellar outing by getting the opening goal at the 18' mark, in what would be the only goal of the first half for either side. She would add another pair at the 60th, which was be the eventual game-winner, and at the 75th.
It was the second career hat trick for Penner, who had her first last season in a game vs Utah Tech. It also brought her week total to four goals, as she also scored vs Hawaii on Thursday.
"Penner is such a pure goal scorer and is so fun to watch," said Woodward.
Hallie Bergford would add the fourth and final goal of the day for SU in the 79th, to go along with her assist of Penner's third goal. The two have been climbing up the record books together, as they are currently the top two active program leaders in points. Penner leads the team in career goals (17) while Bergford leads in assists (14).
Kailee Wilson was also an integral part of the Redhawk attack, assisting the opening and closing goals for the home side. She is tied for the team lead with three goals on the season.
The Redhawks were denied their third shutout of the season when the Beavers scored in the 86th minute, but it would be the lone blemish on the day as they cruised to their 5th straight victory.
Another big number for Seattle U on the day was how many players saw minutes on the field. 21 different Redhawks entered the game, with 11 of them combining for the 22 shots taken.
"It is so nice to see so many great minutes from individuals whether they may be starting or coming off the bench," Woodward added of the team's depth. "It has been exciting to see our freshman get solid minutes and look so experienced out there."
MATCH TIMELINE
"We are looking forward to a day of rest and turning it up for our battle in Portland," Woodward added.
They will play the next six games away from Championship field, starting with a trip south to face Portland on Thursday, Sep. 12. The Redhawks return home exactly a month later for conference play when they host Tarleton State on Saturday, Oct. 12.
