POCATELLO, ID - Behind a brace from Caroline Penner, Seattle U women's soccer battled to a draw with Idaho State, 2-2, Thursday night in Idaho. After taking the lead on back-to-back goals from Penner, the Redhawks concede a late equalizer as they split the points with the Bengals.
"We put ourselves in an unfortunate spot going down early in the game," said head coach Julie Woodward post-match. "Our first half we were not at the level we needed to be to have success and create chances, but the team had a much better second half with Alana (Lamb) really changing the game for us and Penner scoring two very nice goals."
Seattle U found themselves down early in the match, as Idaho State scored the opener in the 5th minute of play. A lead they would take into the halftime break.
It was the Penner show in the second half though, as the junior took over starting with match tying goal in the 58th. She would then follow it up with a rocket of a goal that was shot from outside of the box in the 79th to give the Redhawks the lead. The brace brought Penner's goal total to seven on the season, with six of them coming in the last four matches. It also tied her atop the WAC leader boards for 2024.
The Redhawks couldn't complete the come from behind victory though, with the home sided Bengals netting one in the 87th to end the match in a draw.
"The come from behind attitude was great, but we cannot let those first halves slip away," Woodward added of the draw.
MATCH TIMELINE:
The draw makes it back-to-back for the Redhawks and extends their unbeaten streak to eight. They now sit at 5-1-3 on the season as they turn their attention to the final non-conference match of 2024 when they face Portland State on Sunday, Sep. 22, in Hillsboro. Kick off between the Redhawks and Vikings is set for 1pm PT.
