SEATTLE – Seattle University volleyball battled University of Portland for the second time in three days, but once again could not close out the Pilots in a 24-26, 19-25, 19-25 defeat Saturday afternoon at the Redhawk Center.
The Redhawks (1-6) led in each of the first two sets, but late runs by the 7-1 Pilots turned the tide in each set. Portland led wire-to-wire in the third set.
Seattle U's attack was paced by Arianna Billy's 11 kills. Merima Smajlovic added seven kills and eight digs while Marley Hardgrave had six kills on 10 swings with just one error. Anae Asuncion dished 23 assists while adding four digs, two blocks and a kill.
Portland was led by Maui Robins' 17 kills. Leonie Freytag added 10 and Lia Hawkes chipped in nine.
The Redhawks head to the Bay Area in California to take part in the USF Challenge on Sept. 20-21. They will face two future WCC rivals in Saint Mary's and San Francisco, while also facing Air Force on a neutral court.
