ARLINGTON, TX - Redshirt junior Charlie Lanphier has been named the Preseason Goalkeeper of the Year in thew Western Athletic Conference (WAC), as announced by the conference today. Alongside Lanphier, Jaden Manetta and Taketo Onodera were also named to the Preseason All-WAC Team.
Lanphier is coming off his first full season as the Redhawk keeper and was an instant impact in the box. He started 16 of 19 games in 2023 and recorded a 10-3-2 record with five shutouts. His performance was rewarded as well, taking home a First Team All-WAC selection and Goalkeeper of the Year in the 2023 postseason WAC awards.
Manetta and Onodera both were huge pieces in the success of the Redhawks last season, as they joined Lanphier on the Preseason All-WAC Team. Manetta, a senior defender out of Burnaby, British Columbia, helped anchor a Seattle U backline that held opposing teams to 1.21 goals per game. He was also active in attack, recording two goals and dishing out an assist.
Onodera, a senior midfielder from Kawaguchi, Japan, recorded three goals and an assist on the season including the game-winners vs Oregon State (9/7) and San Jose State (10/21). Both were named First Team All-WAC at the conclusion of the 2023 season.
"Happy for Charlie, Jaden and Taketo to be recognized on the All WAC preseason team," said head coach Nate Daligcon. "They are looking to build and improve from last year and we are excited to begin the season August 22nd at South Florida."
In addition to individual awards, the Redhawks were also picked to finish first in the conference coaches' poll. Seattle U, which is ranked 23rd in the nation heading into 2024, received six of the possible ten first place votes. California Baptist was picked second with three first place votes, followed by conference newcomer San Diego State.
Seattle U opens the new season on Thursday, Aug. 22, at Southern Florida. Kickoff between the Redhawks and Bulls is scheduled for 4pm PT and will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
