SEATTLE – Maintaining its standard of academic excellence, Seattle University athletics performed well in the most recent Academic Progress Report (APR), released by the NCAA this week. The Redhawks recorded a four-year APR score of 986, once again scoring above the NCAA Division I average of 984.
Ten sports equaled or exceeded the sport-specific, four-year national average including men's tennis, women's tennis, women's cross country and women's golf, all of which hold a perfect 1,000 average. Men's basketball's multi-year average of 972 bests the national average by nine points, while the Redhawks' 2022-23 score of 977 beats the national average of 968.
All told, 13 Seattle U sports matched or bested their sport specific 2022-23 single year average. Leading that list are 10 Redhawk programs that tallied a perfect score of 1,000 for the 2022-23 single year report. Men's swimming, men's tennis, women's cross country, women's golf, softball, women's soccer, women's swimming, women's tennis, women's track and volleyball each recorded perfect marks.
Each academic year, every Division I sports team across the country calculates its APR using a simple and consistent formula. Each term, scholarship student athletes can earn one point for remaining eligible and one point for staying in school or graduating. For schools that do not offer scholarships, recruited student athletes are tracked.
The Academic Performance Program has established an essential framework for academic excellence. The program provides measurable goals to ensure schools are fulfilling their commitment of equipping student-athletes with the tools and resources necessary to achieve academic success.
APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team's academic performance. The APR scores released today reflect academic rates from the 2019-20, 2020 -21, 2021-22 and 2022-23 academic years.
