Redhawks Rally Over Thunderbirds

SEATTLE – Seattle U softball (23-30) snatched a come from behind victory in its opening contest of the 2024 University Credit Union Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Tournament, taking down No. 8 seed Southern Utah by a final score of 4-3. Lily Garcia completed the comeback in the bottom of the sixth, smacking a two-out double down the left field to push across a run. Today's WAC contests took place at Logan Field on the campus of Seattle U in Seattle.

Lily Garcia completed the comeback in the bottom of the sixth, smacking a two-out double down the left field to push across a run. Today's WAC contests took place at Logan Field on the campus of Seattle U in Seattle. 

The Redhawks tied up the contest during the fourth inning, scoring two runs on three hits. Taylor Fitch got the two-out rally started, smashing a full count double down the right field line. Jasmine Wehn sent her across home plate on the very next pitch, hitting a single into right field. Nicola Simpson tied the score at two all, crushing a double into right field that allowed Wehn to score all the way from first base. 

Katie Walling went on the provide what would be the winning run in a pinch hit appearance, finding the hole between third and shortstop for an RBI single to plate Garcia. Taylor Fitch lead off the sixth with a single into left field that allowed the Redhawks to score two in the sixth.

Stefanie Madrigal grabbed her team-leading 13th win of the season, throwing a complete game with just two earned runs allowed and two strikeouts. The San Jose, Calif., native held SUU off the board in the first before sending them down in order during the second. Madrigal settled back in after the third inning, allowing just one base runner from the fourth to sixth inning.

GAME SCORING
  • Third Inning: Southern Utah scored two runs on three hits.
  • Fourth Inning: Jasmine Wehn singled to right field for an RBI. Nicola Simpson doubled to right field for an RBI.
  • Sixth Inning: Lily Garcia doubled down the left field line for an RBI. Katie Walling singled through the left side for an RBI. 
  • Seventh Inning: Southern Utah scored one run on three hits.
The Redhawks advance to take on the No. 1 seed Grand Canyon at 1 p.m. at Logan Field.
