Seattle U Split Doubleheader at UT Arlington

ARLINGTON, Tex. – Seattle U softball (21-30, 13-12 WAC) began a three game series with UT Arlington on Friday afternoon, taking the first contest, 4-1, before falling in the final game of the day, 3-5. Both Western Athletic Conference (WAC) contests took place at Allan Saxe Field on the campus of UT Arlington in Arlington, Texas.

ARLINGTON, Tex. – Seattle U softball (21-30, 13-12 WAC) began a three game series with UT Arlington on Friday afternoon, taking the first contest, 4-1, before falling in the final game of the day, 3-5. Both Western Athletic Conference (WAC) contests took place at Allan Saxe Field on the campus of UT Arlington in Arlington, Texas. 

GAME ONE
The Redhawks took the lead for good in the opening contest during the third inning, scoring three runs on four hits. Lily Garcia lead off with a triple down the right field line before Sophia Kissling tied the game at one with a single up the middle. Sydney Frankenberger beat out a bunt single, while Tai Wilson moved the two of them into scoring position with a great sacrifice bunt. Jasmine Wehn sent Seattle U ahead with a sacrifice fly to right field, while Taylor Fitch marked her team leading 18th double of the season for two RBIs. 

Garcia added an insurance run for SU in the fourth, smacking a sacrifice fly to right field for what would end up being the final score of 4-1. Fitch recorded her most hits in a single contest this season, going three-for-four.

Stefanie Madrigal was fantastic once again in the circle, grabbing her team-leading 12th win of the season. Madrigal threw her ninth complete game of the season with just one run allowed as well as striking out three Mavericks.

Madrigal began to lock in during the second, striking out the first two Mavericks and sending down the following 11 of 12 Maverick hitters. Key defensive double plays in the third and sixth halted any momentum the Mavericks were trying to build.

GAME ONE SCORING
  • First Inning: UTA scored one run on two hits.
  • Third Inning: Sophia Kissling singled up the middle for an RBI. Jasmine Wehn hit a sacrifice fly to right field. Taylor Fitch doubled to right field for an RBI. 
  • Fourth Inning: Lily Garcia hit a sacrifice fly to right field.
GAME TWO
The Redhawks immediately tied the contest at two in the second inning, using a Karen Spadafora two-out, single to left field. Fitch led off the second with a four pitch walk, before Ava Sin also walked right before Spadafora.

Spadafora came through once again in the sixth inning, smacking a double down the right field line for two runs. Nicola Simpson opened the inning with a single to right field, before Sin reached on a hard hit ball to shortstop.The freshman marked a new career-high with this two RBI double, posting three RBIs for the first time in a contest.

Avari Morris did well to give the Redhawks an opportunity to stay in the contest, throwing 1.2 innings with just one hit allowed and two strikeouts.

GAME TWO SCORING
  • First Inning: UTA scored one run on one hit hits.
  • Second Inning: Karen Spadafora singled to left field for an RBI.
  • Fourth Inning: UTA scored one run on two hits. 
  • Fifth Inning: UTA scored three runs on three hits.
  • Sixth Inning: Karen Spadafora doubled to right field for two RBIs.
The Redhawks will conclude the three game series with the Mavericks on Saturday, facing off at 10 a.m. pacific time in Arlington.
