RIVERSIDE, CA - Seattle U baseball opened their 2024 conference season with a heartbreaking loss, being walked off by California Baptist, 2-3, Friday night in California. The Redhawks took the lead into the bottom of the 9th, but the Lancers scored the final two runs to take the series opener.

"Tough ball game to lose," said head coach Donny Harrel. "Smith was outstanding tonight and held down the number one offense in the conference. Both teams had some opportunities and pitched it really well and they got the big hit to walk it off. Need to bounce back and get back after it tomorrow."

Blake Smith made his fourth start of the season today, going 6 1/3 and only gave up just one run on four hits. The righty also struck out six Lancers as he was given the no-decision. Jarek Woodward was credited with his second loss of the season after going three innings and giving up 2 runs, including the walk off CBU homerun in the bottom of the 10th.

Offensively the Redhawks used a bit of small ball to manufacturer their runs on the day. Grant Heiser and Jackson Reed drove in the only two Seattle U runs on the day, both off sacrifice situations.

These two sides will be back at it tomorrow, March 9, for game two of the 3-game series. First pitch from Riverside is scheduled for 12pm PT and the game will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
