HILLSBORO, Ore. – Seattle U softball (7-15) wrapped up its final non-conference weekend series on Friday afternoon, falling just short of completing a late inning comeback against Portland State, 4-5. The contest took place at Gordon Faber Field 4 in Hillsboro, Oregon.
Seattle U took the lead first in the third inning as Sydney Frankenberger reached on an error by the third baseman to score a run. Karen Spadafora and Brooklyn Jones opened the inning with back-to-back singles to provide Frankenberger with the opportunity. Taylor Fitch loaded the bases with two outs, smacking a single to third base.
After Portland State took the lead in the bottom half of the third, Seattle U tied it up at two quickly in the fourth. Mikee Morris reached on a bunt single, before Spadafora singled to left field to put two runners on for Brooklyn Jones. Hones hit a hard ball to first base, forcing a tough play that scored a run.
The Redhawks mounted a late comeback in the sixth, scoring two runs on one hit. Mikee Morris and Ava Sin walked to lead off the frame, before Spadafora reached on an error by the shortstop. Two batters later, Lily Garcia knocked home the first run on a fielder's choice to second, while Sydney Frankenberger made it a one run game in the next at bat with single through the left side.
Naomi Chaidez pitched well after coming into the circle during the fourth inning, allowing just three hits in three innings of work with one strikeout.
