BELLEVUE, WA - Seattle U baseball dropped their 2024 home opener to Saint Mary's, 0-5, Friday night at Bannerwood Park. The Redhawk offense was held off the board for the first time this season as they dropped game one of the 4-game series with the Gaels.
"Eaquinto threw a really good game and that's why he's 2-0 with a 0.57 ERA," said head coach Donny Harrel of the Saint Mary's starter. "I thought we did not get enough swings off and a couple of non-plays in the outfield gave them some runs. We need to score runs though and our offense continues to stall. Our aggression at the plate has to improve and to allow us to score runs, so that is the goal for tomorrow."
Despite the shutout, the Redhawks threatened throughout the ballgame. They stranded 10 runners, including two bases loaded situations. Six different Redhawks recorded a hit on the night, with Cole Kleckner being the only one with a multi-hit performance.
On the mound Blake Smith was credited with his first loss of the season. The sophomore went seven innings while giving up four earned runs on nine hits.
Games two and three between the Redhawks and Gaels will be played tomorrow, March 2, in a doubleheader. The game, which was originally scheduled to be played at Bannerwood Park, has moved to Everett's Funko Field. Game one will start at 3pm PT, with game two following approx. 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first. There will be no broadcast tomorrow, but admission will be free.
