SEATTLE – Seattle U softball (9-17) concluded opening weekend of play on the 2024 Western Athletic Conference (WAC) on Saturday afternoon, taking down Grand Canyon, 5-2. at Logan Field. Sydney Frankenberger came through with the game-winning hit in the fourth inning, sending a strongly hit ball past the third baseman's glove for an RBI single.

Seattle U grabbed the lead in the first inning on a heads up base running play from Frankenberger as she reacted quickly to an errant throw by the right fielder. The senior originally reached base with a stellar bunt single, before stealing second base in the next at bat.

After GCU had taken the lead, the Redhawks jumped back out in front during the fourth inning with two runs on three hits. Taylor Fitch lead off with a single through the left side before Ava Sin walked to put two runners on with no outs. Lily Garcia moved them into to scoring position on a hard hit ball to first, putting Karen Spadafora up to the plate. The freshman knocked the ball the opposite way into shallow right field to allow Fitch to score from third. Frankenberger marked her game-winning hit two batters later in a two-out situation.

The Redhawks scored two insurance runs on a back up the middle single from Mikee Morris in the sixth. Spadafora singled to right center before Frankenberger and Tai Wilson got on thanks to back-to-back hit by pitches. Mikee Morris enjoyed a strong home opening weekend, hitting 5-for-10 (.500) with two doubles, four RBIs and one walk drawn.

Stefanie Madrigal earned the complete game win over the reigning WAC Champs, allowing just two runs on seven hits. The senior from San Jose, Calif., really locked in after the third inning, sending down the next nine of 12 Lopes and ending the contest with a one, two, three inning. This stellar defense effort from Sophia Kissling and Lily Garcia prevented the Lopes from opening the scoring in the top half of the first inning and allowed Madrigal to settle in.
