SEATTLE – Seattle University men's basketball turned in a stifling defensive performance Thursday night, holding Abilene Christian to 25 percent shooting as the Redhawks rolled to a 75-52 Western Athletic Conference victory at Climate Pledge Arena.
No Wildcat scored in double figures as the visitors managed just 17 field goals, including just 4-of-18 from three. The Redhawks (14-9, 7-5 WAC) held a 51-34 rebounding advantage, the first 50+ rebounding performance since November 27, 2021 against St. Thomas.
Neither team had much offensive success early until Seattle U rolled out a 17-2 run midway through the half, opening up a 26-13 lead. The spread would briefly reach 14 points before Yaniel Rivera beat the halftime buzzer with a three and Seattle U took a 41-30 lead into the break.
The second half was more of the same on the defensive end as Seattle U never allowed the Wildcats (8-14, 3-8 WAC) to get rolling.
An 8-0 Redhawk run, bookended by a pair of John Christofilis threes, ballooned the spread to 20, 59-39, with 8:13 to play. Seattle U cruised from there.
Christofilis and Alex Schumacher paced a balanced Seattle U attack with 14 points apiece. Cameron Tyson added 11, while Brandton Chatfield and Kobe Williamson had nine apiece. Williamson also finished with a game-high 12 boards.
Seattle U returns to the Redhawk Center on Saturday, hosting a key match-up against Tarleton, who sits in second place in the WAC standings. Tip off is set for 3 p.m.
