SAN JOSE, Calif. - Behind a stellar performance on the mound from Blake Smith, Seattle U baseball took down San Jose State, 7-0, in the series opener on Friday. In his second start of the season, Smith went seven scoreless innings on the mound to earn his first win of the young season.

"Good Friday baseball," said head coach Donny Harrel post game. "Both teams played really well and typical on a Friday, you have to find a crack to create an opportunity to win."

Smith would set the tone for the Redhawks on the day, earning win number one on the season for him. The righty faced just six above the minimum through seven innings of action while striking out three in a shutout performance.

Cameron Dayton would take over on the mound to begin the 8th, picking up the final six outs to earn his first save of 2024.

The offense, which only produced one run through the first eight innings, came alive in the ninth by putting up six to seal the victory. The offensive explosion was capped off by a 3-run homerun by Grant Heiser (1), the first long ball for the Redhawks this season.

HEISER ?? !

The first round-tripper of the season for your Redhawks comes off the bat of our backstop.

"Smith was outstanding and our offense finally broke through and created the big inning," Harrel added. "Dayton closed and door and had a big RBI and beating a regional team at their park is a good confidence builder for us."

The Redhawks now improve to 3-2 on the year and will look to get the series win vs San Jose State tomorrow in game two. First pitch is scheduled for 2:05pm PT, with the game being broadcast live on the Mountain West Network.
