SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Seattle U softball (3-5) took part in a single contest on Saturday morning, falling just short of completing a late inning comeback against Cal Poly, 4-6. The contest was a part of the Silicon Valley Classic I, hosted by San Jose State and Santa Clara, at the Santa Clara Softball Stadium in Santa Clara.
Seattle U got its offense going in the sixth inning, putting three runs across the plate. Sophia Kissling opened the inning with her first career walk on four pitches to get a runner on. With two outs and a runner on first, Nicola Simpson smacked a single to the first baseman, allowing the runner to get to third. Taylor Fitch followed with a strong double to left center, scoring the Redhawks first run and putting another runner into scoring position. Ava Sin put two more runs home in the next at bat, smacking a 1-0 pitch to the shortstop that allowed Fitch and Katie Walling to score on the play.
The Redhawks took that momentum into the final inning, with Mikee Morris, Tai Wilson and Sydney Frankenberger recording three consecutive singles to load the bases with no outs. Jasmine Wehn came up clutch in the very next at bat, putting a single into center field on a 1-2 to make it a two run game.
Grace Luderer opened this contest strongly, working out of jams in both the first and second inning. Berkley Vance worked out of the jam in the third inning and threw a scoreless fourth before handing the ball over to Naomi Chaidez. Chaidez also performed well in the circle, holding Cal Poly to just two hits in two innings and sending them down in order in the sixth to keep the momentum going.
The Redhawks were scheduled to face off against Santa Clara at 12:30 p.m. but this game was postponed due to forecasted rain.
