College Station, TX - Seattle U baseball fell in their season opener vs No. 5 Texas A&M, 2-8, Friday night in Texas. The Redhawks were able to pick up two runs late, but the Aggies were able to hold them off to start 2023 campaign.
Peter Chronowski got the start on the mound for the Redhawks, going 4 2/3 innings while giving up three hits and no earned runs. Chronowski retired the first 11 Aggies he faced, but an error prolonged the 4th inning, allowing for the Aggies to strike first on the night.
"Chronowski was very effective today and gave us a good start," said head coach Donny Harrel. "Those two out errors hurt us and then the bulllpen gave up too many bases."
Texas A&M would plate two with two outs in the 4th inning, they would then add to their lead with three runs over the next three innings as they extended it to a 5-0 game.
Seattle U would spark a rally in the 8th inning when Trevor Antonson led off with a single to left field. Two batters later, Matt Boissoneault would send a towering shot over the left field fence to make it 2-5.
Those would be the only runs of the ballgame for the Redhawks, as the Aggies added three more runs in the bottom half of the eighth to secure the opening day victory.
The Redhawks recorded seven hits on the night, including a 2-for-3 night from Jackson Reed and a career first hit from Hudson Shupe in the top of the 5th. Seattle U out hit the Aggies on the night but stranded seven batters in the loss.
"Happy we out hit the No. 5 team in the country at their place," added Harrel. "Now we just need to outscore them tomorrow."
These two teams will be back in action tomorrow, with Nestor German slotted to get the start on the hill for the Redhawks. First pitch is scheduled for 12 PM PT with the game being broadcast live on ESPN+.
