EL PASO, Texas – Seattle University men's basketball led wire-to-wire Saturday night at the Don Haskins Center in El Paso, Texas, picking up its first road win of the season in convincing fashion, 73-61, over UTEP.
The Redhawks improved to 8-5 on the season, closing out non conference play with a 7-4 mark. The Miners lost for just the second time at home this season, dropping to 8-6 overall.
Cameron Tyson finished with a game-high 25 points on 9-12 FGs, including six threes, to lead a trio of Redhawks in double figures. Tyson got going early, opening the game with a four-point play, and led Seattle U with 15 first-half points.
Also scoring in double figures for the Redhawks were Paris Dawson with 13 points to go with nine rebounds and Kobe Williamson who finished with 10 points and seven boards.
The Redhawks scored 11 straight points late in the first half to go ahead by 12 before a UTEP jumper at the buzzer made it a 34-24 lead at the break.
Out of the break, the teams went back-and-forth briefly before a five-minutes scoring drought for the Miners saw Seattle U go ahead 51-34.
The lead would balloon to as many as 26, 68-42, with 5:29 to play before a late UTEP surge had the Redhawks settle for the dozen-point win.
Seattle U finished shooting 50 percent from the field, including 41 percent (9-22) from three. The Redhawks won the battle on the boards, 42-27, while holding the Miners to 34 percent shooting and 4-of-20 from three.
The remaining 18 games of Western Athletic Conference play await the Redhawks in the New Year, beginning with Utah Tech on Thursday, Jan. 4 in Seattle. Tip off from the Redhawk Center is set for 7 p.m.
