SEATTLE – Seattle University men's basketball evened its record in Western Athletic Conference play with a 73-63 victory over Southern Utah Saturday evening in the Redhawk Center.
The Redhawks (5-3, 1-1 WAC) led for more than 37 minutes in a game that they never fully pulled away in, but also never lost control.
"I'm happy with how we came out to play tonight," said Head Coach Chris Victor. "We didn't play a smart half to start but we had good effort and good energy and we were competing. We built a little lead and I would have loved to see us extend a little bit more, but we'll take a 10-point win at home in conference play."
Cameron Tyson led a trio of Redhawks in double figures, finishing with 22 points on 8-of-18 shooting. Brandton Chatfield matched his career-high with 18 points while also leading the way with eight boards. Alex Schumacher finished with 14 points, eight assists and three steals.
The Thunderbirds (2-5, 0-2 WAC) got 14 points from Zion Young and 12 from Prophet Johnson.
After trading buckets in the early minutes, Seattle U used an 11-0 run to take a 15-8 lead. They would never relinquish that lead, hitting 50% from the field (14-of-28) in the first half to carry a 36-27 advantage into the break.
Working the ball inside was key in the match-up as the Redhawks held a 22-6 points-in-the-paint advantage in the first half.
A 6-0 spurt to start the second half opened up a 42-27 lead. The Redhawks would push the spread to as many as 17, 65-48, with 4:52 to play before settling in for the 10-point win.
"We have some time off with finals coming up next week," said Victor. "The guys will be focusing on finishing off the quarter right and then Northwest will be a good game for us to get our legs back from under us after finals."
Seattle U will return to non-conference play by hosting Northwest University on Saturday, Dec. 9. Tip off from the Redhawk Center is set for 5 p.m.
