SEATTLE – Four Seattle U men's basketball players scored in double figures and the Redhawks held a sixth consecutive opponent to under 70 points in a 79-67 win over visiting UC San Diego Sunday in the Redhawk Center.
Seattle U (4-2) shot nearly 52% from the field and got a season high 28 points from Cameron Tyson, including six three pointers. Brandton Chatfield had 16 points, Alex Schumacher had 13 and Kobe Williamson chipped in 11 for the Redhawks.
"Cam's been so selfless, teams have been denying him and top blocking him," said Head Coach Chris Victor. "It was great to see him get loose today."
The Redhawks led for most of the first half, using a 9-0 run late to open up a 34-20 lead with 2:52 to play in the period. UCSD (4-2) would hit a pair of free throws in the final minute to cut it to 11 at the break, 36-25.
After holding the Tritons to just 32% from the field in the first, the visitors got going offensively in the second, hitting at a 50% clip, including 6-15 from three.
Bryce Pope led UCSD with 22 points and Francis Nwaokorie added 17 as the Tritons pulled to within seven late in the game. Seattle U held on, hitting 5-6 free throws in the final minute.
"UCSD kept the game close," said Victor. "They made a lot of shots and I didn't love our defense in the second half. But that's a very good offensive team and I'm proud of our guys for finishing it. This is a great result for us heading into conference play.
The Redhawks take a quick break from non-conference action to open Western Athletic Conference play on Wednesday, Nov. 29 at reigning regular-season champion Utah Valley. Tip-off from the UCCU Center in Orem, Utah, is set for 6 p.m. MT.
