ARLINGTON, Tex. - Jocelynn De La Cruz, Lily Garcia, Madison Kahwaty and Tai Wilson of Seattle U softball are among those honored by the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Monday as the league unveiled its 2023 postseason awards. Wilson is named as one of the top-13 student athletes in the conference with her first team selection, while De La Cruz's phenomenal season lands her on the Second Team. Garcia and Kahwaty claim All-Defensive Team honors after another stellar season as a middle infield pairing.
This is the fifth consecutive year that the Redhawks have earned at least four year-end honors from the WAC.
Wilson takes home her first career All-WAC award after a spectacular WAC season, finishing in the top-10 in batting average (.438), runs scored (23) and hits (35) during conference play. The sophomore has been one of the WAC's best hitters all season long, ranking tied for second in hits (67), fifth in batting average (.401), sixth in runs scored (45) and 10th in on base percentage (.460). The Fairfield, California, native capped off a great WAC regular season campaign with WAC Hitter of the Week honors after sweeping CBU, hitting eight-for-11 (.727) with one double, five runs scored and three RBIs.
De La Cruz grabs the post-season award after her sole full season with the Redhawks, leading the team in home runs (11), RBIs (56), total bases (106), OPS (1.084) and slugging percentage (.658). The Menifee, California, native was dominate at the plate all year, ranking tied for second in RBIs, fifth in total bases, seventh in batting average (.385) and home runs, eighth in hits (62) and ninth in slugging percentage.The first baseman had one of the best weekends at the plate in the entire country earlier this season, earning WAC Hitter of the Week honors after hitting .471 with one double, four home runs and 13 RBIs at the Judi Garman Classic back in early March.
Garica and Kahwaty claim All-Defensive honors for the second consecutive season, leading the Redhawks in the field as the pairing at second base and shortstop. Garcia made 49 starts at second base, setting a new career-best in assists (108) and putouts (97), while ranking tied for fifth in WAC play in assists with 49. Kahwaty started all 51 games at shortstop, leading the conference in overall assists (154) and assists during WAC play (70). The senior recorded 79 putouts with a fielding percentage of .943.
