MESA, AZ - Seattle U baseball fell in their WAC tournament opener to Utah Valley, 6-16, in 10 innings on Wednesday.
"Really proud of how our offense followed the plan today and got after," head coach Donny Harrel said post game. "We had a lot of loud outs as well that could have provided more run production."
The Redhawks were able to strike first in the game, putting up two in the 1st inning on RBI from Hudson Shupe and Derek Gellos. They would hold onto that lead into the 4th, where the Wolverines put up four and never gave the lead back.
Matt Boissoneault and Gellos would spark a rally the next inning, both bringing home a run to cut the deficit to just one, but that would be the closest the game would get as Utah Valley scored 12 runs over the next four innings to take the game in eight.
Peter Chronowski was credited with the loss on the day, going 3 2/3 while giving up 7 hits and four earned runs. Blake Smith and Kian Hogan both made relief appearances as well, giving up 12 runs.
"Chronowski got caught with no secondary pitches today and they took advantage, as all seven of their hits off of him were on fastballs," Harrel added. "Smith got snake bit on that next four spots with ground ball hits and us not making a play defensively, and then it got ugly as we gave up free bases and did not make some more defensive plays to keep us in the game. Pitching and defense wins games and we need to be better in those aspects of the game tomorrow to have a chance."
The Redhawks will await the winner of the second game of the day, California Baptist vs UT Arlington, and will play again tomorrow at 9am PT.
