SEATTLE – In the realm of collegiate sports, talent and determination are two qualities that are valuable on and off the field. Beyond the diamond, Brooke Milder possesses a story that inspires others, showcasing her dedication and strength. A senior at Seattle University, Milder is a remarkable softball player who is a force to be reckoned with on the diamond. With her dedication, skills and passion for the game, Brooke has left an unforgettable impact on the program. Teamwork, resilience and discipline have fueled her to succeed not only in softball but also in her academic endeavors.
Throughout her softball career, she has experienced the impact of teamwork and collaboration, both on and off the field. She explained that "knowing how to work as a team and knowing how to collaborate has really helped me become the person I want to be for others."
As a softball player, Milder understands that success is not solely determined by individual talent or skill. It is the collective effort and unity of the team that fosters success. Through countless hours of practice and effective communication, she has learned the value of working with her teammates. By recognizing the importance of collaboration, Milder has adopted a powerful mindset that guides her both on and off the field.
"I have learned the value of working with others as a team, which I think translates really well into other aspects of my life. This has helped me be successful in my relationships with my family and friends, and with school, just because I think it's hard to do things alone," Milder explained.
Being a WAC All-Academic player for three years in a row, Milder shows that she values all aspects of her life, and finds balance outside of softball. When talking about the struggles of finding time for everything, she explained how she manages to balance school, softball and social life, stating that, "at first, it was hard to figure out how to prioritize other things, and the social aspect kind of gets pushed to the side, even though it's super important. Doing things I like has really helped me get through these past four years, and finding those positives and latching on to the good things has really helped me."
When it comes to pursuing a collegiate athletic career, many know how difficult it may be to juggle all of the aspects of life while also being dedicated to a team. Milder shared how she initially struggled with finding a middle ground, but with time, was able to figure out what worked best for her. "Balancing my social life, school and softball has helped me get through all the negatives and hardships," Milder explained.
One of the main ways Milder finds balance is through having an outlet where she can turn the outside world off and just focus on the moment. For her, that is being in nature. Whether it's hiking, camping or just escaping the city for a while, Milder explained that "being outdoors is one of my outlets outside of school and softball where I can explore and relax. Nature is really peaceful and it's a place I can escape to."
When Milder has free time in Seattle, she also enjoys exploring the different neighborhoods around the city. "I really enjoy going to the Sunday markets around the city, looking at shops and hanging out with friends, especially when it's nice out," she stated.
The skills and values that Milder has cultivated through her athletic career have positively influenced her relationships with her family, friends and in her academic pursuits. As Brooke Milder begins the next chapter of her life, she takes all of the lessons learned on and off the softball field with her.
