SEATTLE – Nestor German, a starting pitcher on the Seattle University baseball team has had an intense passion for baseball for nearly his entire life, having played it since he was only three years old.
Baseball has had a lot to do with shaping German into the person he has become. He plays baseball every day and has played it since he was very young. He has learned many lessons from playing baseball that have carried him far in life.
"Baseball taught me discipline," German said while discussing the influence baseball has had on his life. "It taught me how to win. It taught me how to handle failure. I feel like what happens on the field, you can relate that to what happens in real life. In life, you can go through hardships, and you always have to find a way to get over them."
In the game of baseball, you are likely to face some adversity and failure, and playing baseball has allowed German to learn these lessons and apply them to his everyday life. The best advice he's been given is: "Work hard and keep your head down. Control what you can control, and give 100% effort."
Among the things German values most are family. And it was thanks to his family that German got his start in baseball. His family is from Mexico, where baseball is a popular sport and they were baseball fans. He went to live in Mexico when he was three-years-old. There, his dad signed him up for little league where an uncle served as his coach, and he's been playing baseball ever since.
When seeking a place to continue playing baseball in college, the Chief Sealth High School graduate chose Seattle University as it allowed him to remain close to home.
German's highest priorities at the moment are baseball and school. When it comes to the challenge of balancing school, athletics, and his personal life, he wakes up with a positive mentality of "How am I going to do better today?" And he knows that time management is key. While he is a self-declared "sports guy," German believes his education is very important, and he knows that it is time-consuming. Some important advice he gives is "Correctly manage your time."
While in season, German doesn't have much time for a social life. However, he does make time for hanging out with friends and family whenever possible. One of his favorite hobbies is cooking, and he enjoys the satisfaction of creating a meal from ingredients with his own two hands. One of his favorite meals to cook is steak and potatoes, and the best thing he's cooked is chicken tacos. Another sport he enjoys playing is golf, and although he claims he's not very good at it, he enjoys the calmness and the competitive challenge that comes with the game.
Nestor German is not only a great baseball player, but he is also a wonderful person with a strong and loving family who supports him.
