LAS CRUCES, N.M. - Seattle U baseball came from behind to knock off New Mexico State, 9-6, Sunday afternoon. The Redhawks put up six runs in the 5th inning on their way to a fifth consecutive Western Athletic Conference series win.
Seattle U trailed, 2-6, before the offense had its big explosion in the 5th. They worked the bases loaded in the inning, when a Hudson Shupe RBI walk and a 2-run RBI single by Matt Boissoneault brought SU within striking distance.
That was followed by a 3-run home run to right field for Derek Gellos, his first of the season, as the Redhawks moved in front. Boissoneault would score another insurance run in the 7th, extending the advantage to three.
"Great comeback by our offense today," said head coach Donny Harrel. "Gellos' first home run of the season could not have come at a better time."
Cameron Dayton and Mason Hoover would then combine to go 5 1/3 of shutout innings. Dayton gave up just one hit while striking out four to snag his third win of the season. Hoover would be credited with the 6-out save conversion, also only giving up a single hit.
"Our bullpen really stepped up with Dayton and Hoover throwing five shutout innings to allow us another series win," Harrel added. "Really Proud of our team effort this weekend and Jackson Lind caught outstanding for 27 innings."
The win helps the Redhawks improve to 17-27 on the season and 13-11 in conference play. They have now won five straight WAC series and six of their last seven.
A final matchup at Washington awaits the Seattle U when they return to the Emerald City on Tuesday, May 9. First pitch from Husky Ballpark is scheduled for 6pm PT.
